RELAXING & READING
B OUNCING INTO THE DEN, MICHAEL chattered, “Hey Grandpa! What are you doing?”
“Oh, hi Michael! Good to see you! I’m just reading,” replied Grandpa while adjusting his recliner. The aroma of fresh perked coffee floated across the room.
“What are you reading, Grandpa? Would I like it? Is it interesting? Does it have adventures? I’ve never seen a book that thick. What’s it all about?”
“Well Michael, this is my favorite book. And yes, you would like it. It is the most interesting book I have. It has lots of adventures in it, too. I like it so much that I read it again and again and again and never get tired of it.”
“Really? May I see it?” asked Michael.
“Certainly,” said Grandpa. “Come over here and I’ll show it to you.”
“Wow! It sure looks old,” said the boy as he looked over his grandfather’s shoulder. The book had obviously been well used. It had wear spots on the cover and corners. Some of the pages had creases and finger smudges. Many pages had marks on them where Grandpa had written, underlined, and circled parts of the sentences.
“Yes, it is old, Michael. This copy is about forty years old.”
“Forty years old! That is way older than me!”
Grandpa chuckled. “I guess you haven’t seen older books very often. I know a lot of what you read is on a computer or a computer tablet.”
“I do read a lot on my iPad,” admitted Michael. “But that’s because I have homework assignments for school that require me to turn them in online.”
“I understand, Michael. New things like computers can be interesting and fun, but did you know that old things can be interesting and fun, too?”
“Well…” Michael said thoughtfully. “I really haven’t thought about it.”
“They can be. For instance, this book is actually centuries old. What I hold in my hand is a copy. It took over 1,500 years to write and has over 35 authors. In fact it is one book with 66 books inside, sort of like an entire library!”
“Did you say centuries old? That’s a l—o—n—g time!”
“Yes, it is, and guess what? Even though it was written by many authors over a long period of time, it has one central message that is consistent all the way through,” said Grandpa. “Pretty amazing, huh?”
“Sure is!” exclaimed Michael.
“Michael!” called Mother. “Where are you? It’s time to go to basketball practice.”
“I’m in here, Mom, talking to Grandpa. Grandpa, I guess I have to go. If I can come back tomorrow, will you tell me more about this book?”
“I will be happy to do just that,” answered Grandpa with a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
T HE NEXT DAY, MICHAEL FINISHED his schoolwork and asked his parents if he could go to Grandpa’s house. Dad said that he could go over to Grandpa’s after he took out the trash and unpacked some boxes from their move across the country. Michael took care of those chores and Mother drove him over to Grandpa’s house. When Michael arrived, he scrambled through the house to the den to see if Grandpa was there.
“Hi, Grandpa! You’re still in the recliner! Did you stay there all night and all day?”
“Well, hello, Michael! It’s good to see you again. No, I’ll have you know that I did not stay in the recliner all night and all day…just part of the day,” chuckled Grandpa.
“Grandpa, tell me more about your favorite book.”
“Okay, Michael. My favorite book is called the Bible. Let me remind you that this book is like a library of 66 books put together and has over 35 different authors. It was also written over a period of some 1,500 years. It has parts that are history, parts that are poetry, parts that are prophecy, parts that are biography, and parts that are letters. It tells us about the beginning of time when God created the world, the plants, the animals, and people, too!
“The Bible teaches us the best way to live and it shows us how we can know God. Michael, if you will get to know this book thoroughly, it will be worth more to you than anything you could ever learn in any school.”
“That’s amazing. I’ve never heard anyone say that about a book. How could one book be so important?”
“Well, Michael, I said that this book has over 35 authors, and that is true…but it also has one special person who is the actual Author. He used all the other authors to write it down for us. That ultimate Author is God Himself. So, this book is the Word of God. It is God’s message to us! I like to think of it as a book of love letters God sent to us so that we might know Him and learn the very best way to live.”
“Hmmm…I don’t understand exactly,” said Michael.
“Michael, God is so incredible that He created everything that has ever been made. Nothing is too hard for Him. He knows everything! In fact, He is the One who holds the universe together. When I attended seminary, my teachers used some big words when they talked about things like this.
“One of those words is omnipotent. That means God is all-powerful. He is stronger than anything or anyone. We know that because this Book says, ‘ In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth’ (Genesis 1:1). Since God created everything, nothing is more powerful than Him.
