Chapter 1

It’s a sunny, cold and windy morning. The little red fox is cold, tired and very hungry after an unsuccessful night hunting. He almost caught a fat rabbit. It was a fast, furious and close chase. So close that the rabbit’s hind feet kicked dirt in the fox’s face when it escaped in a cloud of dust going under a pile of brush. It’s well past his bedtime and the fox now wonders if a short nap might change his luck. The rest would do his body good.
Setting against a tree not far away is a hunter named Larry. Larry loves to watch bird and animals when no game is around. He’s watching a pretty blue jay when he sees a red fox in the distance. His interest changes from the blue jay he can see any time to the fox that’s rare and coming toward him.
The fox stops under a large northern red oak that had begun to die. There’s a large flat rock under the tree that has been warmed by the autumn sun. Being in the sun, protected by the tree from the cold, crisp air, the stone is as warm as toast. The fox spins around several times and lies down, covering his muzzle with his big bushy tail.
The fox is about to fall asleep when overhead a woodpecker starts pecking on a large dead limb trying to find a fat grub for lunch. TAP! TAP! TAP! Bark, dust and chips of rotting wood rain down on the fox. The fox is disturbed and looks up at the woodpecker. The woodpecker stops pecking. The fox lays his head back down and covers his muzzle. The woodpecker starts back to pecking. TAP! TAP! TAP!
Larry laughs as this scene is repeated several times before the woodpecker flies away to find lunch somewhere else. The fox settles back down and dozes off. Larry sets his gun against a tree. He has decided to see how close he can get to the fox before it wakes up.
Maybe I can catch it he thinks, so he picks up his bag and quietly sneaks toward the sleeping fox.
Larry can’t believe his luck; he’s standing next to the fox. In one quick move Larry puts the bag over the fox’s head and shoves the fox in his bag. The fox is startled awake and jumps, going to the bottom of the bag. Larry closes the top. Kicking and scratching are a waste of energy, Mr. Fox has been caught. Larry can’t believe he has caught a fox with his hands. He’s laughing with excitement and talking to the fox and to himself.
“You’re the dumbest fox I’ve ever seen,” says Larry.
“What gives you the right to catch me you idiot, yells Mr. Fox, let me out of here.”
“You can talk!” says Larry.
“That’s right! Yells Mr. Fox, “now let me out of here.”
“Not so loud, says Larry, I’m hunting and your yelling will scare the animals away. Besides, why should I let you go?”
“I’m afraid of the dark yells Mr. Fox, now let me out.”
“That’s not true, says Larry, foxes hunt in the dark at night.”
“I’m claustrophobic, I can’t tolerate small spaces. I’m having an anxiety attack and can’t breathe,” complains Mr. Fox.
“Lies you tell, says Larry, foxes aren’t claustrophobic, and they live in holes in the ground called dens.”
This isn’t working, so Mr. Fox tries to calm himself down so he can think of a plan of escape. Just then the aroma from Larry’s lunch attracts his attention and he no longer wants out of the bag, he wants to eat!
Larry had made a sandwich of ham and cheese with mayonnaise on rye bread. Mr. Fox didn’t find food last night and he’s very hungry. This is the best food he’s ever had.
“I can’t believe I’ve caught a fox, make that a talking fox,” says Larry.
“Why have you stopped talking?”
Mr. Fox doesn’t answer; he’s enjoying his sandwich. The next sandwich is peanut butter and grape jelly on white bread. Mr. Fox loves the taste of grapes and this grape jelly is the sweetest grape he has ever tasted.
Mr. Fox isn’t talking and Larry gets worried and asks, “What are you doing?”
Mr. Fox’s mouth is full causing him to mumble, “Best lunch I’ve ever had.”
Larry doesn’t understand fox’s mumbling and asks, “Are you losing your ability to talk?”
Mr. Fox mumbles some more, “I can’t talk with my mouth full.”
Larry doesn’t understand this mumbling either.
Mr. Fox finishes Larry’s lunch and feels rejuvenated. He can think better now that his tummy is full.
“Let me out says Mr. Fox. I have to go to the bathroom.”
