CHAPTER 1

I t began one day just as the snow and severe cold winter had subsided. It was the onset of spring. The wind was warm and blowing gently across the flowing grass and newly sprouted yellow and purple flowers. A plentiful pasture with white-peaked mountains covered in snow reminded everyone that winter had not been gone for long. This beautiful plateau sat high above the rest of the land, with a dangerous roaring creek far below.
Miles away from this land was the cutest little ranch you could ever imagine. Rancher Greg and his wife lived on this ranch, and they had many farm animals. There was the sweetest goat you could ever meet, named Buttons. He was a fat white goat who was constantly chewing and could easily win a hay-eating contest if given the chance. And then there was Q-tip the lamb. She was round and thick from her cream-colored wool, which had kept her warm and cozy all winter long.
But the most special animals of all on this ranch were a small herd of cows. These cows were snow white in color with black spots all over their bodies. The rancher had been taking care of them for a very long time, and throughout the years he had heard stories about these very special cows. Of course, the stories were only tales, but he couldn’t help but believe that in some way the tales would be true. It was said that a special cow would be born, one that would become stronger and braver than any other cow, and that he would bear a rare, black mark on his back shaped in the letter L . It was also told in the stories that he would become a great leader, not just for his herd but for all animals near and far.
Spring had arrived, and it was time for the rancher to move his herd to the plentiful green pastureland. It was nearly a full day’s ride to take the cows up to their special land, where they would spend the summer away from the ranch. The cows’ white coats and black markings almost glowed against the newly sprouted green grass. The rancher was pleased to have his herd back on their land. It was where they needed to be to fill their bellies for the summer.
As the rancher made his way back down the valley and toward his home, he thought again about the stories he had heard. Maybe this year will be the year! Maybe a special cow will come. He chuckled to himself and continued on his way.

As the cows settled in, they started to hear talk among the other animals about a very evil head coyote and his pack that had been making their way closer and closer to the green pasture and the cows’ home. The animals said that beyond the pasture and over its edge lay a creek far below which flowed dangerously fast. The coyotes lived down below where this dangerous creek flowed. The coyotes would stop at nothing to kill, for they were ruthless and feared throughout the land. You see, the cows had heard stories too, and they feared that this terrible evil pack would make its way to the cows’ land.
But for now, the herd was safe and enjoying this time of year. They were preparing for their new spring babies to arrive. One mama cow in particular was making plans for the arrival of her baby. This mama cow’s favorite place was just beyond the plateau that overlooked the creek far below. The steep cliff had always kept the cows safe and separated them from any other animals coming into their land. It was said that only pure evil and danger lurked beyond the flowing waters. No one had ever tried to leave the land and go beyond the creek, for it would mean certain death for all.
The mama cow settled in next to a small group of trees, in a quiet spot covered with sage bush and freshly grown spring grass. She made a soft bed in the foliage and waited for her baby to arrive. When the sun rose the next morning, she gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. He was snow white in color with splashes of black dots on his back and four black legs that looked just like socks. As the mama cow looked over her new baby, she noticed a design on the side of his body. Her eyes opened wide in disbelief, but that’s when she knew. She took a deep breath and quietly said to her baby, “Why, you have a black spot shaped just like the letter L on your side. I shall call you Lucky.”
