Chapter 1
It was the year 3053. Cars could fly. People lived and breathed in space. Tara was 10 years old and her granddad lived on the Earth’s moon. Every night at 8 o’clock, she looked through her telescope at him and he was always there, waiting to wave.
* * * *
It was early Saturday morning and Tara was heading to the intergalactic post office. It was her granddad’s birthday and she was off to post his present. On every birthday and Christmas, they sent each other presents. The intergalactic post office was a huge building in the centre of the city, with a marble staircase and a landing area for spacecraft on the roof. Inside, the building was split into the different planets of the solar system. Tara skipped over to the moon section.
‘Hello, Tara, how are you today?’ Mrs Garrett was always working on the moon section and was Tara’s favourite postal worker.
‘Hi, Mrs Garrett! I’m good, thank you, how are you?’
‘I’m very well, thank you, sweetheart. Granddad’s birthday?’
‘Yep. I’d like this sent to the moon, please.’
‘Of course, dear.’ After filling in some details on the computer, Mrs Garrett placed the present in a large tube which sucked the parcel up to the landing area, ready to be packed on the mail ship headed for the moon.
* * * *
Tara got home just in time for her favourite TV show. She was halfway through the show when it was interrupted by a news broadcast.
“BREAKING NEWS! WE HAVE JUST BEEN INFORMED THAT THE EARTH’S MOON IS GOING TO BLOW UP! I REPEAT. THE EARTH’S MOON IS GOING TO BLOW UP!”
Tara couldn’t believe it. She had to warn her granddad. The moon was his home. She knew her parents wouldn’t take her to the moon, so she had to go herself. Tara’s parents kept a backup rocket in the garage in case of emergencies and her dad had taught her to fly it.
* * * *
When Tara got to the moon, everything was normal. No one was panicking. People were just going about their business.
Surely they’d heard the news about the moon blowing up. She headed straight to her granddad’s house. The door was ajar. ‘Granddad? Are you here? You’re in danger.’ There was no answer. She stepped inside, only to find the house empty. There was no sign of her granddad and all of his things were gone. Maybe he’d heard the news and left. Perhaps he was somewhere safe.
Tara walked back out on to the street. As she looked around for any sign of her granddad, a young boy was staring at her from across the street. When he saw her look at him, he smiled and waved, ‘Hi, Tara!’
‘Hi, how do you know my name?’
‘I knew your granddad; he told me all about you. I’m Toby.’
‘Do you know where my granddad is? All of his stuff is gone.’
‘I don’t know. Some men in suits went to his house and then he packed up his stuff and went with them. I tried asking where he was going but he just told me to go home. I could help you find him, if you like. It’ll be an adventure.’
‘But where would we even start? I don’t know where my granddad went. And what about the news? The moon’s going to blow up!’
‘I sent that message. I didn’t know how else to get you here. The men took him to the south side of the Intergalactic Space Station. We could visit each planet on the south side until we find him?’
‘That’s a great idea! It’ll be such a big adventure.
