Chapter 1
“What, no it can’t be that time already, I’m not ready,” said Will out loud as the alarm rang out signalling it was time to get up. The summer holidays were over already and the new term was starting today.
Will looked over at his brother Sam who he shared a room with. He was still snoring.
“Sam, wake up, Sam,” he repeated a couple of times until Sam stirred, rolled over and said “What” in a yawn, “It’s time to get up, time for school,” urged Will.
“I’m not done yet,” whispered Sam as he rolled over and stuck his head under his pillow.
Just then mum burst in and flung back the curtains, “Wakey wakey, rise and shine,” she said loudly as Will hopped out of bed and Sam groaned again.
The boy’s gulped down their breakfast as usual whilst chatting about the start of the new school term.
“At least I’ve got Mrs Lewis this year,” said Will, “She’s cool,” he added.
Sam sat pensively and then replied “I don’t know who I’ve got, can’t remember.”
With that mum interrupted and said “Miss Yorkshire Sammy, the new teacher.”
“Oh yeah,” Sam drawled as he finished the last of his Weetabix “That’s right.”
Teeth brushed and uniform on the boys grabbed their school bags and followed mum out to the car, the journey to school was short and uneventful as they remembered and before no time they were parking up in the usual spot and making their way to the school gates.
It was chaos in the playground as kids rampaged everywhere; new kids and old kids alike all with shiny new uniforms and shoes that would be wrecked before the week was out. Kids were playing, sulking, chatting and crying. The din was almost unbearable and the teachers were attempting to shepherd children around. Will laughed at their attempts. He thought they could do with lassos to catch the kids and round them up.
Eventually the chaos calmed down and the teachers had all the children ready in lines in their new classes with their new teachers.
Will’s friend Aaron nudged Will – “Where’s Mrs Lewis?” he whispered.
Will looked around in panic as it dawned on him that their new teacher was nowhere to be seen.
“I don’t know,” he whispered back, then all the children in his new class began to utter the same thing as if they had heard what Aaron had said.
“Silence!” came a voice so loud and frightening that the children froze on the spot as if trapped in some sort of alien force field. Then as if in one motion they all turned slowly and gazed upon the voice. They were startled to see an enormously tall lady standing at the head of their class. Will’s eyes widened as he saw her and his mouth dropped open. Before he had time to think the Headteacher, Mr Mead, started to talk.
“Class 5L, Mrs Lewis decided to move abroad in the summer and to teach in Australia. Whilst we wish her luck I would like you to welcome Miss Ironside who will be you’re new teacher this year. You will now be called class 5I.”
A stunned silence fell over the children as they took in this new information. Will could not stop staring. He watched as Miss Ironside nodded at Mr Mead and turned to face the class. There’s something not right here, he thought. And I’m going to find out what...
Chapter 2
A confused silence had fallen over the children of the newly formed class 5I as they fell in to line behind their new teacher. They marched in single file into the school and took their place within the surroundings of their new classroom. They were still reeling from the news that Mrs Lewis, whom they all liked, had chosen to leave and move abroad. Will nudged Aaron and was about to whisper something to him when Miss Ironside’s head turned with a snap and stared straight at him. Her gaze fell upon him instantly as if she knew he was about to speak. Thinking better of the idea he just closed his mouth and smiled whilst carrying on in to school with the rest of the class.
Once inside the noise level began to grow as the children started to decide who would sit next to who.
