About The Author
This is Maverick Ashbrooke’s first serious attempt at writing a children/preteen story. He has always possessed a creative mind via mediums such as art and craft, also studying and working as an engineer up to his late 20s. He then decided to look at how people’s minds worked and trained as a therapist. For the past 16+ years, he has worked as a therapist in the North East of England, where he also currently resides. However, having an imagination has always meant he wants to do more in his life and this is where his writing came to light over the last few years after losing his father suddenly.
Maverick Ashbrooke is hopeful this first book will lead to more in this area and has many more ideas to take this story forward. He has had dogs throughout his life, and much of this story is from his own childhood, also fiction and from stories he has heard over the years from other dog owners, to combine this first book and coming books in the future.
Maverick Ashbrooke continues to walk his current Doberman and has stories to tell of his antics as a close member of his family unit.

This is a story about a naughty dog. He wasn’t always called naughty dog or just Dog, he went by other names and now, you might be thinking, Why would a dog change its name? Well, he didn’t—his owner(s) did in the future. No one knew where he came from, but what we do know, he was sent to a family that needed to find love and be happy, especially a little boy in that family and this is where the journey begins.
The Beginning
It was believed Dog started out life many years ago, when I say years ago, it was the 1970s, it could have even been earlier than that, but this is when this particular family came across him. In the 1970s, everyone had long, big hair, flared trousers and most people found it acceptable to bully each other, fight and call people names, it was an unhappy time for a lot of people. Anyway, getting back to the story, Dog was a black and tan puppy (Doberman) with a long curly tail—we guess he was abandoned by someone else, maybe this person was unable to love him—so this is why Dog ended up where he was. He was found in a scrap yard next to a garage. He was living in an old car and lying on the back seat with old rags and found by a man called Eddy who worked in the garage.
Eddy had big, red ginger hair like a microphone. If he ever combed it in a Parton, it would look like a huge Bum stuck on his head, so only occasionally he had it in this style. He also had a big Moustache which was very trendy and lots of men grew one to look like people on TV at the time. Anyway, Eddy was working at the garage as a mechanic and would give Dog scraps from his lunch whenever he had a break. However, one day, he decided to take him home to his Father Jed to look after him. Jed was a big man, always wore a flat cap, tweed jacket with a shirt and tie, he came from a time where men were men and took no prisoners, you could say he was strict, but some saw the softer side to him, especially his grandson, Arthur. Jed loved dogs and wanted to give him a home with Arthur and Eddy, oh and Arthur’s grandmother, Grandma Little Bea and this is where the story really starts—not earlier!

Arthur’s Great Auntie Moira’s New Shoes
Arthur had a big family, so did Dog now; he was part of the family. Every week Arthur’s Great Auntie Moira would visit his Grandma Little Bea; this was his grandmother’s sister. Arthur’s Grandma Little Bea loved her Sister Moira, but she often felt poor when she visited, as she didn’t have as much money as her. It was because Grandpa Jed had to stop working with ill health and this meant her home didn’t have much furniture, but still was really clean. Great Auntie Moira’s home was very posh, with lots of nice things and she was always dressed really well, but even though she had more money, she was still a really nice, kind woman, you could say. She went to College, learned to play the piano and married a nice man called Derek who really looked after her. Every time she visited Arthur’s Grandma Little Bea’s home, she would have new clothes on and really expensive shiny, leather shoes. Well, to naughty dog, this was a ‘Red rag to a bull’—Bulls can’t resist charging at red colours and shiny new shoes to any dog is like a red rag—‘Seek and destroy’!
Arthur would often play in the living room with naughty dog when Great Auntie Moira would visit. Arthur liked being with them all and was also a bit nosey and liked to hear what stories his Grandma Little Bea and Great Auntie Moira would have to tell about the family. This was always done with a few cups of hot strong milky tea with sugar—they used to call it, ‘A cup of Mary Lou’, some cake and enough cigarettes to start a cigarette shop! Great Auntie Moira knew naughty dog liked to chew shoes and slippers, so she never took any chances and always put her shoes around the back of the chair when she visited and got them from behind the chair when she left, it worked liked clock work every time. Well, one day naughty dog found them! Arthur knew naughty dog had gone round the back of the chair where Great Auntie Moira usually sat and Arthur thought it was a game. He was also a bit naughty like naughty dog, although, this was maybe because Arthur was just a mischievous little boy and knew no other. Naughty dog had gone round the chair as the cigarette smoke was choking him, as dogs have really sensitive noses and in a small room with two chimneys puffing away, it was always hard for naughty dog to breathe normally. Arthur knew naughty dog was playing with her shoes and pretended he hadn’t seen him. He was curious as to what would happen as the shoes were always kept away from naughty dog. So Arthur sat and waited…
…And waited…
…And waited!—All this waiting was getting sooooo boring!
Finally, after an eternity of waiting, like years…well a short while, naughty dog came from the back of the chair to get a drink and lay down in front of the fire. What had happened around the back of the chair? Arthur wondered. Then it happened! Great Auntie Moira decided to go home for tea. It was all going to kick off big-time now, or so Arthur hoped. She went round the back of the chair like usual, talking to Arthur’s Grandma Little Bea at the same time and saying what a nice time she had again and would visit next week. She let out a scream, “ARRRGGGHHH”…when she saw what had happened! Her nice, new, cream leather shoes were all chewed up, all t
