Say hello to Luca, a cool little dude who is something of a local hero here in the Florida Keys. It’s warm and sunny near the beach, so he spends most days playing in the surf with Mom and fishing in the ocean with Dad.








One day, Luca was visiting one of his favorite places, a shallow area of ocean water called a reef. In the reef, he could feel the warm, soft waves splash against his tummy and the sand squish between his toes. Tiny yellow and red fish darted through the water, tickling his legs. Luca’s mom explained that the reef is an ecosystem, where millions of different sea animals and plants depend on each other to survive. She was pointing to the many shapes and colors of coral in this ecosystem when an unexpected visitor came to a gliding stop at Luca’s feet! A sea turtle stopped to snack on seagrass growing among the coral. Luca stood very still as he watched the speckled flippers move the turtle from plant to plant. Then— bloop —the turtle popped his head up out of the water and took a breath and then quickly disappeared into the seagrass beds.
This was not Luca’s first encounter with this endangered species. We are about to join Truman, the amazing sea turtle, on his journey of rescue and rehabilitation. We will find out how Luca became this lucky turtle’s hero.
