Return of the Gypsies
Chapter One
Shirley pushed the toy truck through the dirt, creating a road. Maybe a racetrack , she thought. Around and around the truck went until the banks of the racetrack were higher than the truck.
“Hey, there,” came a cheerful voice.
Shirley looked up from her corner of the garage. Her dad leaned to the side to see around the hood of Ida’s car.
“RJ! How are you doing?” The men shook hands. “How’s the house coming along?” RJ had recently married Shirley’s Aunt Grace, her dad’s sister.
“Pretty good,” RJ nodded. Shirley came out of the corner. “What are you doing, Ragamuffin?”
“Hi, Uncle Jay,” Shirley said as she clapped her hands to shake off the dirt. “Did Aunt Grace come with you?”
“Sure, she did. She’s in the kitchen with your grandma.”
“Daddy?”
“Go on, honey,” Dad knew what she was about to ask. “Go see Aunt Grace.”
“I was wanting to talk to you about work out at the rock quarry,” RJ said as Shirley rushed out of the garage.
Shirley entered the Conoco Station, coming in the back door of the kitchen. Her grandparents had run the station for years. Her grandpa, Chester Dunscombe, or Chet as everyone had called him, passed away four years ago when Shirley was only two. Her grandma, Hattie, still operated the station, which included gas pumps, a restaurant, cabins, and the garage. Her daddy now worked in the garage in his spare time, as needed.
Shirley’s grandma and aunt were sitting at one of the tables. As usual, Grandma had kicked off her shoes. She had her ankles crossed while they talked and drank iced tea.
“Aunt Grace!” Shirley dashed across the room with her arms flung wide. Aunt Grace gave her a big hug.
“Whoa,” Aunt Grace laughed. “You about knocked me out of my chair!”
“I missed you,” Shirley squeezed Aunt Grace’s neck again.
“I was here not two days ago,” she reminded her niece. “What have you been up to while I was gone?”
Shirley had to think about that for a moment. “Well, I played with Donna, sort of. I was playing in the garage while Daddy worked when Uncle Jay came in.”
“How do you ‘sort of’ play with Donna?” Aunt Grace sounded puzzled.
Grandma stood up to get Shirley a drink. “Would you like a cookie?”
“Yes, please,” Shirley nodded. She explained to Aunt Grace. “Donna brings her dolls to the ditch in front of her house. I bring my dolls to the ditch across the street in Sylvia’s yard. Then we play together, kind of.”
Grandma placed a glass of Kool-Aid and a cookie on a napkin in front of Shirley. “Thank you, Grandma.” She took a big gulp of the drink.
“Okay,” Aunt Grace said, trying to understand. “I don’t get it. Why don’t you just play together in one yard or the other?”
“We do sometimes. Mostly her daddy won’t let her cross the road and my daddy won’t let me cross the road.”
“I see…,” Grace tried to hide her smile.
The sound of the front door opening had Hattie slipping on her shoes to greet her customer.
“Afternoon, Hattie,” they heard a man say. “I need five dollars on the first pump there.”
“I’m going out to see what your dad and Jay are doing.” Aunt Grace held out her hand. “Do you want to come with me?”
Shirley nodded while she shoved the last of her cookie in her mouth. She took a quick drink.
In the garage they found Art still under the hood of the car. RJ was sitting in the driver’s seat.
“Rev it a few times,” Art called out.
Shirley covered her ears. Aunt Grace tugged on her arm, leading her out of the garage.
“A little loud in there, huh?”
Shirley nodded.
“Shall we visit with your mama?”
“She’s probably taking a nap,” Shirley shrugged.
“Let’s find out.” Aunt Grace held Shirley’s hand, swinging it back and forth. “Maybe she’s awake now.”
Shirley’s backyard and the Conoco Station’s backyard are connected. It is easy for Shirley to visit her grandma about as often as she wants.
Suddenly Shirley was lifted into the air from behind.
“Uncle Jay, put me down,” she giggled.
“Never,” he said as he lowered her to the grass. He tickled her. “Want me to stop? Want me to stop?”
Shirley laughed, trying to avoid his wiggling fingers. “No! Yes, yes.”
Uncle Jay stopped tickling her to grab a handful of grass. He sprinkled it down over her face, laughing. “Look, it’s raining. The rain h
