To my grandchildren, who inspired me to tell them stories. To my husband, who gave his time and support. To Kareen Ramsey for the illustrations. And to all my family and friends who encouraged me. Thank you.
Chapter 1
“M om, Dad, are we there yet? Haven’t we been in this car long enough? Can we stop for a few minutes just to stretch our legs?” Sophie adjusted her seatbelt for the hundredth time. Why did it always feel like it was choking her? She really didn’t like wearing it. Why couldn’t they fly? Then she’d only have a belt around her lap, and that she could handle. But she knew that wasn’t ever going to happen. She had only flown once, and that was to her aunt’s. Dad said it was very expensive. Maybe if Dad would drive just a little faster, it would help.
Mom and Dad exchanged one of those smiling looks.
Mom answered, “Be patient, honey. We’ll be stopping for lunch soon, and then it’s only another hour to Grandma’s. Why don’t you listen to some music on your headphones? It’ll make the time go by faster.”
“Yeah,” Josh said. “I want to sleep. So be quiet.”
Sophie turned toward the backseat and gave her brother a good-natured look.
“That’s because you were up until 2 a.m. watching your favorite movie. You’ve watched that old movie a hundred times. By now, you probably have all the lines memorized.”
Emma laid her book on her lap, looked over at her sister, and then at Josh in the backseat. “Come on, you two. I’m trying to read. I only have a few more pages. Can’t we have a little silence until then?”
“You shouldn’t have waited to read that book in the car,” Josh grumbled. “You know Sophie can’t be quiet.”
“I can too, Josh Bennett! You’ll see. I’m sorry, Emma.”
Suddenly Dad slowed the car down, pulled onto the shoulder of the road, and stopped.
“Whoa, Dad, what’s the matter? Why did you pull off the road? Is something wrong?” Josh sat straight up in his seat.
Dad pointed to a man standing on the side of the road next to a blue, four-door sedan. “It looks like he’s had car trouble. Maybe we can help him.”
That’s my Dad. Sophie flinched at the thought of spending one more minute than necessary in the car. Dad was always helping anyone in need. And she knew this wouldn’t be any different. Why did this have to happen now?
Mom was apprehensive and said, “Do you think it’s safe? We can’t just pick up strangers on the road. Think about the children.”
“I’ll just ask him if he needs us to call someone. Don’t worry. It’ll be okay. I don’t intend to give him a ride unless I think it’s safe. But we can’t just leave him on the side of the road.
Sophie watched as her dad got out of the car and walked back to the man. She paid close attention to him as her dad greeted him. She had an idea that might help if the situation turned bad. She reached into her book bag and got out a pen and a piece of paper. She wrote on the paper, The stranger had a slim build and was average height and was wearing a black suit with a white shirt and a green tie. He was driving a blue, four-door car, and the license plate number was 7GCP 419770. Sophie wasn’t taking any chances with this stranger. She looked over at Josh and saw him writing something down too. But before she could tell her mom what she’d done, Josh spoke.
