The Good Rhinoceros
This story is about a very brave white rhinoceros named Blanco. These animals are generally called rhinos, and there are several different kinds of rhinos, including black, Indian, and white. Most people have heard of the white rhinoceros. But the white rhino is not called white because of its color.
Years ago, the local people used a word that sounded like white but was really wide . A mistake in the translation of one language to another caused people to use the word white instead of wide mouth, and this error has never been fixed.
Sadly, white rhinos have become almost extinct due to poaching. People kill rhinos because of the stupid belief that their horns are very valuable; they are used in Eastern medicine. But the horns are of absolutely no medicinal value and are in fact made of the same stuff that hair is – not bone at all.
Because human scientists are very clever, there is a possibility that we may again see white rhinos roam in the wild.
Some years ago, when rhinos were in less danger of extinction, a rhinoceros named Ceros, who weighed a little more than the weight of two large cars, became the father of a small copy of himself. He was the prominent dad rhino in the whole of Africa, the world’s largest continent.
Ceros called his son Blanco.
