Acknowledgments
I want to give a special thanks to Felicia Lamb for her contribution of ideas as I created the story The Shelter Dog . For the past twenty-five years, she has been a dedicated teacher with an unwavering desire to help the countless number of kids who have passed through the doors of her classroom. She has also provided a safe and loving environment to numerous shelter dogs that were undesirable for some reason.
Ms. Lamb is a loving, caring teacher to students, regardless of their academic or economic level. She treats everyone with fairness, thereby gaining not only their respect but also the respect of their parents. She creates an exceptional environment for learning and tries to end each day on a happy note. She spends countless hours even at the end of the school day working on projects to make better and brighter students. Nothing stops her from having successes in the classroom while making all children feel as if they are a contributor to this part of their world.
She has brought many shelter dogs into her home as pets for her young sons. The breed of the dog was never a deciding factor when she rescued a dog. She made choices with the assistance of the boys and their attraction to specific dogs, from a small, long eared pup with three legs to an old dog with sad eyes. She has a big heart for both children and dogs who have been left behind for one reason or another. She goes above and beyond the call of duty to help those in need.
Felicia is very mindful of the fact that abandonment issues can influence emotional behavior in both children and pets. Pets that are left at shelters and children who are left behind for one reason or another may feel unloved or unwanted. These feelings may not be easy to overcome without some type of intervention. Therapy may be necessary to bring about an emotional change that will help them feel that they are worthy of love.
Preface
The Shelter Dog is a story about a dog who suffers from abandonment issues due to being dropped off at a shelter and never reclaimed. These issues can become a very serious problem without some type of intervention. Many pets suffer so severely that they never again feel secure enough to lead a normal life. Such was the case of the shelter dog.
After he had spent many months at the shelter, someone finally adopted him. He was so excited to have a new home, but when his new companion left him for any reason, he felt unloved and unwanted again. He started thinking, He’s never coming back for me. I’ll be going back to the shelter. For hours, he yelped, whined, and barked so loudly that all the neighbors complained. He often did destructive things that his new owner just could not tolerate. Something had to change, or this new companion would have to go back to the shelter.
This is the story of an abandoned pet, but it could easily have been the story of a child who had been left behind for some reason (death of parents, divorce, drugs, or emotional neglect). That child, too, might feel unloved and unwanted. Intervention is the key to understanding someone’s behavior, whether you’re dealing with a pet or a child. When a child is acting out through destructive behavior and disrupting the home or classroom, he or she may be screaming for attention but not saying a word.
