Extrait

W ilhamina Contance Winston Churchill Ingersol hated cats. She hated cats that lived at the neighbors’ house and played with the flowers in their lawn. She hated cats that bounced hilariously in the window of the pet store, tangling themselves in shreds of last week’s newspaper. She even hated cats that slept lazily in the sunny shop windows that she walked past on her way to the bakery with her mom. It disgusted Wilhamina that everywhere she looked she saw cats. Cats, cats, cats. Wilhamina hated cats. She hated them because she couldn’t take them home. Why couldn’t they play with the flowers in her lawn, or sleep in her sunny window? She decided it was time to ask for a cat.

S he washed her hands and face – Mommy liked that. She cleaned up her room – Mommy liked that too. She ate all her vegetables at dinner and put her plate and fork in the sink when she was done – Mommy liked that best. She didn’t even ask for dessert. When Mommy had finished clearing the table and washing the dishes, Wilhamina put on her best smile and asked sweetly, “Mommy, may I please have a cat now?” Her mother looked at her best smile, clean face, and clean hands and said, “Nope.
