J apan is an island nation located in East Asia and is surrounded by the Sea of Japan (the East Sea) on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other side. In this book, we will be learning about what to see when visiting this magnificent country.

Tokyo
T okyo is the capital of Japan and is the most populated metropolis in the world. In addition, it is one of Japan’s 47 prefectures, that consist of 23 central city wards as well as multiple towns, cities, and villages located west of the city center. The Ogasawara Islands and the Izu Islands are also part of Tokyo.

T okyo was referred to as Edo prior to 1868. As a small castle town of the 16th century, Edo became the political center of Japan in 1603 once Tokugawa Leyasu had established his feudal government there. After a few decades, Edo grew into one of the most populated cities in the world.

I n 1868, with the Meiji Restoration of the city, the emperor and the capital was moved from Kyoto to Edo, and renamed Tokyo, also referred to as the Eastern Capital. During the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 and due to the air raids in 1945, large areas of Tokyo were destroyed.
