E spaña, or Spain, is much more than bullfights and siestas! Read on and learn about the land, the climate, and the people of one of the most interesting countries in Europe.
The shape of Spain
S pain is in the southwest of Europe, bordering France to the northeast and Portugal on the west. The Atlantic Ocean lies to the north and the Mediterranean to the south and east. The southern tip of Spain is less than ten miles from the northwest tip of Morocco in Africa. Spain covers about 85 percent of the Iberian Peninsula, which it shares with Portugal. It’s the third largest country in Europe.
Geographers usually divide Spain into ten regions:
Iberian Peninsula
Meseta Central
Meseta Central
A bout half of the Spain lies on the Meseta Plateau, in the middle of the country. Although it is called a plateau, it is not really flat. It is a hilly area with mountains that divide it and surround it. The Sistema Central mountain range splits the Meseta into a smaller, higher area to the north and a larger, lower area to the south. Some of the mountains have snow at their tops all year round. Several passes through the mountains allow for easy passage between the north and the south of the Meseta.
The Cantabrian Mountains in the northwest
T he Cordillera Cantábrica runs parallel to the northern coast of Spain. These are limestone mountains, some more than six thousand feet tall.
