T hroughout all of history people have wondered about what was beyond that next river, ocean, mountain or planet. Explorers are those who have blazed the trail to find what may be beyond these places. Lewis and Clark explored Western North America and the Louisiana Territory. In this book, we will be learning about the wild west expeditions of Lewis and Clark.
The Age of Exploration
T he Age of Exploration occurred between the 15th and 17th centuries. It was during this time period that several countries in Europe sent explorers in search of new lands, finding trade routes, seeking treasure and gaining territory. Much of the world had been mapped
and many civilizations had come into contact with one another. It was also referred to as the Age of Discovery.
Why Do People Explore?
T here are many reason for exploration. While most explorers enjoy the adventure of finding new land, others enjoy meeting new peoples and learning their cultures, or the thrill of a new challenge.
Lewis and Clark
P resident Thomas Jefferson asked Lewis and Clark to map and explore the North American wild west. They traveled more than 7,000 miles to the Pacific Ocean and back.

C aptain Meriwether Lewis was President Jefferson’s private secretary and was in charge of the exploration of the recently purchased Louisiana Territory. He asked William Clark, who was a friend of his, for assistance.
