WHO WERE THE OLMECS?
T he Olmec people lived in Mesoamerica in the centuries before 1200 BC and declined around 400 BC. They came before the Maya Civilization and the Aztec Civilization and they influenced their cultures. The core of their population was centered on the part of the coastline along the Gulf of Mexico before the Yucatan Peninsula. However, the impact of their culture and their trade activities was felt as far south as the land belonging to the modern-day country of Nicaragua.
O lmec culture produced striking art and architecture, such as mysterious huge stone sculptures of heads and sacred temple complexes including pyramid structures. They worshipped animal gods and drank chocolate. They had a unique ball game on a court as well. All of these arts and practices were passed on from this first great civilization of Mesoamerica to subsequent cultures of this region.
