In this book, we’re going to talk about the dinosaur dig sites in Antarctica. So, let’s get right to it!

The continent of Antarctica in the Southern Hemisphere didn’t always have the icy climate that it does today.

During the Jurassic Period, the continent was positioned much closer to the equator in the southwest Pacific Ocean.

At that time, Antarctica had forests as well as other vegetation. Even though its climate was much warmer than it is today, it would still have been rather cool in relationship to the hotter temperatures that were more ideal for most dinosaurs and prehistoric marine reptiles.

Dr. Steve Salisbury, a paleontologist from the University of Queensland, and his team of a dozen other scientists made an expedition to James Ross Island off the Antarctica Peninsula in 2016.

They chose this area of Antarctica because during February and March it’s warm enough for rocks to be exposed. The rocks in that area are about 70 million years old and they found more than a ton of fossils.
