Stella can’t wait to start school. But just before the beginning of the school year, her parents tell her some terrible news: the family is moving. When the moving van arrives, Stella is very sad to leave her familiar neighborhood and friends. 

In her new neighborhood in Berry Bay, Stella makes some new friends. But at Berry Bay School, Stella has more trouble getting used to things—especially Casserole Day in the cafeteria and her strict new teacher.

A t long last Stella was old enough for real school. This year she wouldn’t have to watch on the first day as kids walked by in little groups, on their way to the elementary school. She wouldn’t be told she was too young. Not anymore! She was starting first grade, and the beginning of school was only a couple of weeks away.

E ven the red bike that she had gotten in the spring was ready to go. Stella had asked her dad to pump up the tires. She herself had washed the bike with the garden hose and then dried it with a towel. At first Mom had been angry to see the greasy towel. But then she understood that Stella was just excited. Stella’s big brother Mikey, though, laughed at Stella’s eagerness.
“Just wait and see, Stella. After a few weeks at school, it will have lost its charm,” her brother said. “Besides, it’s silly to wash your bike in July. It will get dirty many times before school starts.”
Stella didn’t believe such nonsense. Mikey was clearly just jealous of her fine backpack and shiny bicycle.
