I n this book, we’re going to talk about art and literature in the Middle Ages. So, let’s get right to it!
A rt in the Middle Ages varied from region to region in Europe. It also varied depending on the span of time. Despite these variances, the styles of art were distinctive enough that they can be divided into three major periods: Byzantine, Romanesque, and Gothic.
A Byzantine mosaic in the old church Hagia Sophia showing with Jesus Christ, from the 12th century.
T he majority of paintings and sculptures during this time period were based on somber religious themes. They were displayed in Catholic Churches so that people would be able to see religious scenes while they were worshipping at mass. In addition to paintings and sculpture, artists of the Middle Ages were masterful at metal work and engraving. Beautiful stained glass windows were created for cathedrals and manuscripts were written and illustrated by hand. Mosaics made from small tiles were sometimes created instead of paintings.
Apse of Sant Climent de Taüll (detail).
WHAT IS BYZANTINE ART?
T he beginning of the Middle Ages is also referred to as the Dark Ages. This period lasted from 500 AD to 1000 AD. Most of the art produced during this time period was art in the Byzantine style. It was produced by artists living in Byzantium, which was the Eastern Roman Empire.
