I n this book, we’re going to talk about when the Boers reached Africa. So, let’s get right to it!

I n the region of South Africa, the first colony established by people from Europe was Cape Town. The colony was started in 1653 by Jan van Riebeek who was a Dutchman. As the population of this colony increased, more settlers came from France, Germany, and the Netherlands. The people from these different countries became known as the Boers.

WHO WERE THE BOERS?
D uring the 17th century, the Boers made their home in the northeast region of South Africa, which was called the Transvaal region. Over time, the term “Boer” took on a larger meaning. It was meant to represent all the people who were descendants from the early Boers as well as others who had the same beliefs as the Boers.

T heir history is very controversial because they are associated with treating people of other races with cruelty. This long-standing racism in South Africa became known as apartheid. Apartheid was a system that allowed for institutions to segregate and discriminate against non-white, native Africans.
