L ife in ancient China involved a lot of hard work. Unless you were very rich you worked with your hands almost every day. However, there were huge festivals at different times in the year, and on those days people got together with family and friends instead of working.
Some of these festivals are still celebrated in modern China. Read on and learn about them!

Festivals large and small
I n ancient China, festivals were very important for building community, giving shape to the year, and honoring the gods and the ancestors. There were national festivals, local festivals, and religious events. Taoist religious festivals were held to protect villages or people from evil spirits, to honor ancestors, and to seek peace for the dead.





Festivals mean food and family!
F ood, and eating good meals together, has always been a strong element of Chinese celebrations. In ancient China, people would travel to their home villages to enjoy the festivals with family and long- time friends.

A nother important element was rituals. Each festival had special ceremonies or other ways of observing the event, and it was important to do everything in the right way to keep the universe in harmony.





Spring Festival
E ach year started with the most important festival, the Spring Festival. It lasted 15 days, and during it people gave thanks for the past year and prepared for the new one. The festival started with the first day of the new year. People have celebrated this festival in China for at least three thousand years.
