T he Great Depression occurred during the 1930s when there was a horrible economic crisis. It started in the United States, and then spread quickly throughout most of the world. Many people during this time were homeless, hungry and out of work.






P eople stood in long lines at soup kitchens in the city for some food to eat. Farmers in the Midwest struggled, and to make matters worse, a drought caused the soil to turn into dust and create dust storms. Read further to learn more about the Great Depression.

Five thousand school teachers demonstrate in downtown Chicago. During the Great Depression they worked for months without pay.









How Did It Begin?






T he stock market crash which occurred in October 1929 was only the beginning of the Great Depression. Economists and historians provide many different causes for it including consumer debt, stock speculation, drought, overproduction of goods and bank failures.
