WHAT WAS THE RENAISSANCE?
Brunelleschi Cupola, Florence Duomo, Italy
T he Middle Ages was a dark time in Europe. Conditions were unsanitary and most people lived a life of struggle and uncertainty. The Black Death had wiped out millions of people. The Church controlled everything and most people lived in fear of death or the fires of hell. In the midst of this struggle, people longed for a better life.

A s Europe transitioned out of the Middle Ages, things began to change. There was a revival of research centered around former glorious civilizations, such as those of Greece and Rome. Although things were still unstable politically, there was more wealth. New machines, such as the printing press, had made reading and literacy available to many more people. As a result, people from all social backgrounds became educated.
