Description

The Ancient Greeks didn't just excel in math and philosophy. They also soared when it came to art. Art history is a refreshing way of knowing the local culture, customs and traditions. It details the truths of the world and myths, too. Without art, history will be boring and handing it down from one generation to the next will prove to be a challenge.

I n this book, we’re going to talk about the Severe Style of Ancient Greek art. So, let’s get right to it!

T he Ancient Greeks became well known for the perfect details they highlighted in their art forms. During the Classical Era from 490 to 450 BC, they developed a unique style, which modern art historians would call the “Severe Style.”
In order to understand this shift in their design style, it should be compared to the design style that they displayed in the previous period of history called the Archaic Period.

Marble figurines from Cyclades. Early Bronze Age, 3200 – 2300 BC.

GREEK ART IN THE ARCHAIC PERIOD

A round 1000 BC, the Greeks began to produce life-size and larger-than-life-size sculptures made of stone. It was the first time they had done this since they produced the Stone-Age statues called the Cycladic sculptures around 2500 BC. The Cycladic sculptures were made of marble and were generally used in tombs. The only facial features sculpted on Cycladic sculptures were the noses. They look like modern abstract art today.
