A t the edge of the ocean you can find a world of mud. Let’s find out who lives there!

mudflats

A world of mud
T wo times a day the ocean tide comes in, and two times a day it goes out. Along many parts of the shore you can find broad areas of mud that are sometimes under water and sometimes in the air. These are mud flats.
The plants and animals that live on mud flats have to be very special. They have to be able to spend half of each day under water, and the other half exposed to the sun and the weather.

T he mud flats don’t look very lively, but if you look closely you can find they do have animal life. The effect of the tides, the high amount of salt from the salt water mean that only very special animals can live well there.
Here are some families of creatures that live in the mud.
Lots of clams
Clams are part of the mollusk family. They have shells in two parts, with a hinge, and they can open and close the shell to move around in the water and bury themselves for protection in mud or sand.

Fresh clams

C lams are “filter feeders”. That means they take in water, and with it little bits of plant or animal material that the clam can eat, and then squeeze the water out again.

Here are some interesting clams:
Basket cockles
Basket cockles live just a few inches down in the mud. They have to stay near the surface so they can get air.
