The French Revolution changed more than France. Its democratic ideals still inspire reformers around the world. Read on to find out more about the famous people on both sides of the French Revolution.

The French Revolution started in 1789 and lasted ten years. At the start of the Revolution, most power and wealth were in the hands of the nobility and the royal family. The Roman Catholic Church was very powerful, and France was almost bankrupt.

The world turned upside down

Attack of the Bastille

General Bonaparte at the Council

By 1798, when General Bonaparte seized power, the French monarchy had been abolished and tens of thousands of the nobility, the great landowners, and the clergy had been either exiled or executed. France had moved to a more democratic system of government and a fairer court system. But France was still in financial trouble, and was threatened with invasion from several European neighbors that wanted to roll back the revolution’s changes.

Learn more about how the French Revolution unfolded in the Baby Professor book, The French Revolution: People Power in Action. For now, let’s look at some of the important figures in this troubled and exciting time.
