WHAT IS A CALIPHATE?
A caliphate was a government structure run by Islamic religious leaders. An Islamic leader called a caliph was in charge of the caliphate. The succession of caliphs generally went from father to son or if the caliph had no son, his closest male relative would be the next in

line to become caliph. The caliph was believed to be directly connected to Muhammad, the prophet at the core of the Islamic religion. Muslims worship one god that they call Allah and Muhammad was Allah’s messenger.
