CHAPTER ONE

Memories
As I sit on this rocky overhang watching the setting sun, I fondly think of my mom Ruby who once said “Summer sunsets may be warmer but winter sunsets are brighter.” That was before my mom died at the hands of the evil scientist who was only interested in the genetic makeup of the werewolf population. My name is Lilith.
I pull my hoodie tighter over my pointy ears, it’s enough for the humans’ attention I don’t need. My werewolf side. My amber eyes the color of the sun were also hidden from the humans by the dark brown contact lenses. I gladly took them off at night. Another ache in my heart was my father Liam’s disappearance. Now I live with my Aunt April and Uncle Max, short for Maxwell, they had gone on a trip to a nearby village for supplies and they told me to watch over the property while they were gone due to hunters in the area. She never could quite understand why people were afraid of her kind.
The cabin in which they lived and shared food and modest home one with one door, two windows with black shutters and a stone fireplace where they often huddled for warmth. It also had one shared bathroom and a brick exterior. Since Lilith wasn’t old enough yet many chores were to be done including taking care of the garden which she enjoyed. Her least favorite like most teens was cleaning the bathroom... because of all of the shedding.
She was reflecting on the house work when her ears picked up on a twig snapping, it got her attention, Hearing laughter beyond the trees she knew it was Nancy’s, her friend from Elementary school, she wondered if Nancy knew her wolfish side as she neared closer, sniffing the sweet smell of pine and coconut and hearing the fast heartbeat of her friend.
Nancy had slightly began to suspect who Lilith really was. She was only seventeen yrs. old but seemed so much wiser than her peers and her grade school coaches. Why could Lilith disappear without a glance to one eye? The last clue? It was her loose fitting clothes in an attempt to hide her appearance. But sometimes the wind would push her hoodie back enough to see a pinched ear. Nancy waved a warm hello. “Nancy you are finally here are you ready for supper?”
“What do you have?”
“Steak rations with carrots on the side fresh from the garden, cooked.”
Together they raced towards the house a quarter of a mile away. Naturally Lilith was five steps ahead of Nancy but as they neared the house, Lilith stopped short in her tracks kicking up dirt and went behind a tree, sensing danger she pulled her friend near her close needing to smell the air but unsure how to do it without gaining attention she came up with an idea.
She motioned with her finger to her now dry lips and patting the air to whisper in hopes the threat wouldn’t advance. Nancy who was crouching now beside her friend asked in a hushed whisper, “What’s wrong?” Shh... she cautioned
“I’m not sure, I need to get a closer look stay here and stay down please I’ll explain everything later..” Nancy nodded trusting her friend.
Creeping forward, Lilith waited until she was sure her friend couldn’t see her true form due the now near pitch blackness from the forest covering the sky above from the slightest light above the tree line.
First she removed her hoodie and carefully laid it down near a favorite bush where she’d easily pick up her own scent. Now with her ears exposed her hearing was astoundingly better, a scent drifted on the breeze carrying someone unfamiliar to her, turning towards the house she listened to the heartbeat. A fast heartbeat indicated fear a slow one meant he probably was a hunter. She shifted her bodyweight the leaves moved beneath her, holding still she phased into her grey werewolf body course hair bristling on edge her padded feet quiet as the night. An owl hooted in the night, her amber eyes fully adjusted to the sight before her. A young man maybe her age was not four hundred feet from her cabin. Sweat began to build on his forehead... he was nervous all right.
Scott felt something watching him in the darkness, but he wasn’t as uneasy as he should have been, indeed he was no hunter but fellow kin he had yet to discover the family secret. It was told that there was a book in the woods that wrote of the legends surrounding the local tribes that had come before the hunting season sixty years ago. The culling the called it. It all started when someone a hunter discovered a werewolf and instead of learning why they were a genetic miracle passed down through the centuries to someone who had the gift in the DNA in the blood, the hunter sought out him as prey which turned to a changer for all future werewolves. “That which is misunderstood is often exterminated.” It was a favorite saying among the hunters. Luckily the werewolves and their children survived by their wits and wolfish instincts carefully, the population echoed some of its former glory. Although much of the history was lost, except in a few books like the ones Aunt April and Uncle Max had hidden beneath the planks of the house.
Scott had yet to hone in on his skills instead he yelled out “Is anyone there?” Half expecting a reply he waited, the silence was deafening. Now only a hundred yards away Lilith turned back into her human side and quickly throwing clothes on that are left in the garden in case of a problem, she didn’t know if he could be trusted peeking around the side of the house she yelled out
“Who are you that you should ask such a question in the night?” Turning towards the voice “I’ve come to discover the past to understand my future.”
“Are you alone?”
“Yes, I’ve traveled for two days and I am nearly out of food do you have shelter for the night? Those who sent me said I’d have safe passage but to try to be in by nightfall.”
“Yes I have a safe place my friend and I were about to have supper. Stay here for a minute I will be right back.”
She whistled into the darkness low high low tones. Transforming into the wolf, she raced back to her belongings. Marking the tree when she got there her heart was racing, she wondered if she wasn’t putting them in danger. Her intuition felt right about it. Shifting into her human side the hoodie back on. She whistled again to Nancy their secret message that all was good.
Nancy’s teeth were chattering as she hid behind the third tree worried until she heard the secret code. “You ok? I can hear you from here, follow my voice... come on there is a visitor and he’s to share dinner with us.” Rations ever since the culling began sixty years ago, meat a wolves favorite meal started slimming down as humans started hunting more animals during the day and hunting wolves! Her kind. With a voracious appetite that seemed to strike at the heart of the population where it hurt most leading them to near extinction. The first dozen found out the hard way. Eventually the werewolves would wait until dusk to hunt safer but with slimmer pickings. So the tribes decided on rations until the hunt picked up and the threat from hunters diminished. Hunters then and scientists now couldn’t figure why her kind was gifted. Sometimes it would skip lying dormant, like a patient hunter waiting for the right prey to attack.
Nancy asked Lilith if she was ok, she was lost in thought for a moment but then she snapped out of it. They slowly walked side by side back to where Scott had been waiting. Come in I’ll start a fire, this is my friend Nancy, I’m Lilith and you are?”
“Scott hello.”
As Lilith bent over and started the fire Scott noticed her hair peeking out of her hoodie and all of the sudden he felt something but wasn’t sure what it was but she did smell nice. Her friend on the other hand had a different scent, Nancy had begun cutting up the carrots for the meal into the pot it went. She got the feeling like she was being watched and was a little spooked, not the best feeling so she spoke up first saying “Hope you like carrots they are in abundance this season.” “Sure do like them thanks.” Soon dinner was ready and they all ate by the light of the warm fire and some candles. Lilith kept her hoodie on tight. Small talk after dinner while Nancy made tea to drink before she had to leave for back home in town. A short mile run she was pretty fast. Not as fast as a werewolf bu
