[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of “Cartha’s Search For Valhalla’s Tears” by Michael Equels.]
4 out of 4 stars.
Cartha’s Search for Valhalla’s Tears is a fantastic book written by Michael Equels. This is a thrilling book by the author that talks about the adventurous story of Allo and his companions in their quest to become men. It tells the story of how a young boy of 15 years named Allo is so eager to finally go on a voyage of self-discovery to become a well-respected man. But before he can go on such a voyage, he has to be chosen as it is a tradition in their town. Did he get chosen? If so, what things and adventures did he experience on such a voyage? And was it worth it? Who is this storyteller?
The author in this book starts the book with a famous storyteller narrating Allo and his friends’ story. The storyteller narrated their experience on their departure day and how those that got chosen went and those that didn’t stayed back. Now, did Allo and his friends get picked in this tradition of rite to manhood? How desperately did he want to be chosen? If chosen, what wild adventures await him and his friends? Will this journey actually change their lives forever? Will he find the great adventure he is seeking for? And what would he learn at the end of everything?
The positive aspects I found in this book were numerous. First, the author’s style of writing was simply engaging. I love the way the author narrated his story in old English, using words like eventide, growed, gander, dank, etc. I also love the storyline of the book. It was both interesting and captivating and had me at the edge of my seat. I love how the author used humor, romance, adventure, comedy, and somewhat tragedy in telling his story. I love all the lessons he portrayed in the story. He portrayed that one should always be the best one can be in every situation, even when you think you’re a nobody, but a nobody can do great things too. I love the character of Arth, Allo’s best friend. I loved how resilient and brave he was to take up the leadership position and guide everyone not in a tyrant’s way but in a diplomatic way where he sought their opinions on his decisions. I also love Allo and Malisa’s relationship because they loved each other through their best and their worst. They were always there for one another.
I tried to spot a negative aspect of the book but didn’t find any. The book was quite satisfactory and really interesting.
Although I found some errors in the book, I would say this book was well edited. I would rate the book 4 out of 4 because the errors did not affect the flow or rhythm of the author’s story. It was still satisfactory nonetheless.
I recommend this book to people who like historical fiction and fantasy books and people who are into books about adventures too. I would mostly recommend the book to people, young or old, who are on their own voyage of self-discovery; this would be an inspiring piece of work for them to read.

PROLOGUE
The children had been escorted there and asked to patiently await my arrival. The back room of my tailor’s shop had been being used for this very purpose for the past thirty-two years.
It was a bit dank and dusty, drably adorned perhaps and sparsely furnished but served its purpose well. There were twenty-two high-backed chairs that encircled a small table which held but two items. An old oil lamp and a book, a large tome, really.
It was rather old, tattered and worn a bit, but it was still my most favored and prized possession, other than my memories. I had thought to have it copied one day to preserve its integrity, but then realized, that would never do.
My favorite old rocker chair, sat just behind that table, where I would sit and read from that book and hopefully pass along something of value to another, and so, I began to tell the greatest tale ever written…
CHAPTER ONE
THE CHOOSIN’ AND DEPARTURE
I had been unable to sleep and lay awake for most of the night and had lain down to nap, when I was abruptly awakened from my afternoon of fitful dreamin’ by the deep, long and ominous wailin’ sound of the great ram’s horn in the towns square.
All of the folk hereabout knew that it was meant as an urgent calling of all the citizens to gather in the township of Ezra. I took a moment to gather me wits, ‘fore dashing off into town to find out what the matter was.
I had quite the long run to get to town, from our farm. Through the golden fields of wheat and oats that me pa was growin’ and into the darkness of the lush green forest then splashing through the ice-cold creek that still carried the snowmelt off the mountains toward the North, ‘fore meeting up with the hard-packed and dusty dirt road that led East into Ezra.
As I was running past the tailor’s shop, the shop’s keep, grizzled old, Master Poloft, urgently motions for me to stop and come inside his shop. I soon found meself in his back room among five other boys and one girl, who were all enraptured in his retelling of the ancient story of Ascottal Crabtree, one of the boys who tried to prove hisself a man after the Council had declared him unready at a Choosin’ some time back.
And how he had snuck out after the others and had departed, to make it on his own and prove that he too, was a real man. They had combed the woods and hills for three days ‘til they had found his crumpled body at the bottom of a deep ravine stripped of all his worldly possessions and how it had driven his poor ma crazy to think of her poor boy dying at the hands of some blood-thirsty bandits who threw his body down that ravine.
He went on to tell ‘bout his year long trek and all the evils that befell his fellowship’s
