I n this book, we’re going to talk about the influence that the Renaissance period has had on our modern world. So, let’s get right to it!





WHAT WAS THE RENAISSANCE?
B etween 1300 AD through 1700 AD, there was a complete transformation of culture and art in Europe. This period is called the Renaissance and the word “Renaissance” means “rebirth.” This rebirth began in Italy and then spread through the surrounding countries of Europe.

A t this time, Italy didn’t have one central government. Instead, they had powerful city-states that were frequently at war with each other. Despite this political instability, culture once again began to flourish after the many dark centuries of the Middle Ages.





THE MIDDLE AGES
I n 476 AD the Roman Empire fell. It had been the dominant force in Europe for over 1,000 years. This is the event that marked the beginning of the Middle Ages. Advances in the arts and sciences as well as in the principles of government that had been created by the ancient Greeks and the Romans began to disappear.
