I n this book, we’re going to talk about the Hoovervilles during the Great Depression. So, let’s get right to it!

An unemployed man standing near his hut in a New York City shanty town during the Great Depression.

T he “Roaring Twenties” were a period of ten years of peace and prosperity for the American people. Despite Prohibition, many people were having a good time and earning enough money to at least survive if not thrive. Even though the flow of alcohol was restricted, the flow of money wasn’t.

T he economy had grown by a factor of more than 6, from 60 to 400 as measured by the Dow Jones Industrial Average. People were investing in stocks in record numbers. Some people had even mortgaged their homes and borrowed money from the stockbrokers in order to buy more stocks.

No one thought that the economy was weak or ready to fail. Most investors had no clue what they were buying and didn’t realize that stocks were selling at prices that were higher than their true value.

P resident Herbert Hoover was elected in 1928 in a landslide. He had won 40 of the 48 states against the Democratic candidate Al Smith. Hoover took office in 1929 and the economy was slowing a little, but no one thought it was anything to worry about.
