Riddles to solve

EUROPE The Romans used this smelly liquid as a stain remover and for cleaning teeth.

AFRICA After the decline of the Egyptian civilization, the Arabs and Europeans reduced these “treasures” to powder, and concocted all kinds of remedies from them.

ASIA These astonishing elements recently discovered on several dinosaur fossils in China let us believe they are not yet entirely extinct!

OCEANIA This fearsome predator that appeared in Australia about 50,000 years ago is the most ferocious ever seen on the island.This creature is partly responsible for the disappearance of several species, including the giant kangaroo, the giant koala and the terrible marsupial lion!

NORTH AMERICA More than 10,000 years ago in North America, this creature was one of the game animals hunted by the continent’s first inhabitants.

CENTRAL AND SOUTH AMERICA The Mayan people knew about the wheel, but rather than using it to move about, they employed it to make this kind of object.

World map and timeline For the purposes of the adventure, the world is divided into six continents, each with its own number of discovery destinations.You will find these continents, the discovery destinations and the six riddles to solve on the world map on pages 4 and 5.We suggest you photopopy this map. It will allow you to orient yourself at any point, plot your course and write down the letters as you find them.To locate an era, refer to the timeline on pages 155, 156 and 157. Hidden letters Each discovery destination corresponds to an article in the book. Reading an article may reveal one or more letters in the riddle associated with a continent. To solve a riddle, you must travel around a continent, find the hidden letters and put them in the right order. Navigation The last page of each article offers you a choice of three new discovery destinations. It is up to you to choose what direction to take. Careful! You may sometimes have to retrace your steps to reach your desired destination.

3 Vézère Valley, France 16,000 BC he reindeer hunters' rallying cry echoes through the Vézère T Valley. After spending a day following the migrating game animals, everyone meets up at a seasonal shelter in the hollow of the cliff overhanging the river. Several hunters take advantage of the Sun’s last rays to sharpen their weapons. That is when a man, nicknamed “the sorcerer,” motions to you to follow him. The sorcerer holds out a stone lamp for you, a simple hollowedout rock with burning reindeer fat. He leads you into the dark depths of a cave. After crawling several feet (meters), you come to a vast gallery. The sorcerer opens some pouches, containing black, yellow and red powder. He spits into the various bags and mixes his saliva with the powder. Next, he adds fat to create strange potions. The sorcerer sucks up one of them through a hollow bone. This is the moment when the magic begins.

Do you think the sorcerer has just swallowed his potion? Not at all. He is actually blowing it onto the cave wall... and bringing it to life. Before your eyes, the wall is transformed into a horse! You have the honor of being next to one of mankind’s first artists, a H omo sapienscalled CroMagnon!

The oldest representatives of H omo sapiens—ormodern humans—were huntergatherers who appeared in East Africa about 200,000 years ago. They are the origin of the 6.5 billion human beings scattered across all the continents today. Other human species existed in prehistoric times, but only H omo sapienshas survived. Some of these early modern humans left Africa around 100,000 years ago. They reached China 67,000 years ago, Australia about 50,000 years ago, Europe around 40,000 years ago and the Americas a bit more than 20,000 years ago. The H omo sapiens who settled in Europe are known as CroMagnon.
