THE LANDLORD AND THE OLD PEASANT
Once upon a time, there was an old peasant man who drove out to plow the field and plowed up a hoard of treasure – a whole cartful of gold. He brought the gold home and hid it. Then, he turned to his wife and said:
“Don’t you tell anyone about this, old woman!” But he kept an eye on her just in case.
Meanwhile, what does the old woman do? She goes to her neighbor and says:
“You’ll never guess what happened - my old man found a hoard of treasure! But you can’t tell a soul.”
The moment the old man heard her spill the beans about his treasure, he told her to bake some pies and cook up some blini pancakes. The next morning, as soon as he was up, he took his wife along, and the pair of them got on the cart and went out to work in the fields. He took the pies and the blini pancakes along, too, but he sat the old woman facing backwards in the cart. As he drove, he scattered the pies along the road.
The old woman saw the pies on the road and took up yelling: “Hey, old man! Look at all these pies here!”
The old man replied: “Well, go on and gather ‘em up, wife. It must have been a pie-cloud that rained pies on us!”
So the old woman gathered them up and put them all in a bag, and they kept driving.
