It was Friday, October 27th. It was overcast and cool in Edmonton. We were working the 8:30-4:30 shift out of Planning & Development. My subordinate’s Rudy Valdez. The boss is Department Head Meekins. My name’s Clancy. I’m a Building Inspector.
It was three minutes past four when the call came in. I palmed the receiver, said, “Clan-” and the woman on the other end of the line started chewing my ear off, giving me much more than just the facts. According to her, there were building and fire code violations thick and heinous enough to fill a mug book, at the Sunshine Apartments on Knight Street.
“What’s your name, ma’am?” I asked, when the whistleblower finally let the pea drop from lack of breath.
A brusque click and a dial tone was all I got for an answer. Good enough. I stroked computer keys, called up the skinny on the Sunshine Apartments: the last City inspection had been five long years ago, by none other than Felix ‘The Moneymaker’ Conraker. I shook my head, grinning grimly.
Felix Conraker had taken more bribes from shady developers and cutthroat contractors than the twenty-four man committee running the Montreal Olympic Stadium project back in ‘76.
