Prologue
The rain seems to have set in, but it is still a warm night for early October. I figure the rest of the camping trip will be very…well, wet! We are running back to our tents from the lake. It has been a glorious afternoon swimming and kayaking. We’ve been watching the clouds roll in all afternoon and now it seems the first pre-summer storm is about to hit.
As I run for the tent, I can hear thunder rolling its way in and laughter coming from Cayleigh, my best friend, who is in front of me. There are seven of us in total between three tents. All university students, all studying education bar one boyfriend. We have decided to gather our food and drinks for a communal dinner in the camp kitchen. While Cayleigh ducks inside the tent to get our drinks, I grab some napkins and paper plates, our camping cutlery and salad I prepared before leaving for the lake. I lift it from the larger bowl it was sitting in, the ice has melted but has kept it nice and cool.
Cayleigh pokes her head out from the zip and she is a sight. Her green mermaid-like eyes are gleeful, her cheeks flushed rose from the day and running in the rain. Her wet red hair is flat with bits stuck to the sides of her cheeks. Her skin is perfect. Pale with no freckles other than a small splashing on her nose. She is wearing a navy and white bikini and has sand streaking up her legs and on her feet.
“Here, take these,” she hands me our throw over sundresses, something perhaps more suitable for a resort pool. Bunched with them is insect repellent and two plastic wines glasses. I put it all down at my feet to squirm my dress over my wet body. As I lift my heavy long auburn hair up into a ponytail, Cayleigh yells from inside, “You want wine or scotch?”
“Mmm, scotch, please. God! What an awesome day,” I let out a big sigh. Time to relax, I think to myself. Cayleigh emerges with a bottle of scotch, a bottle of coke and two plastic cups. She leans down to gather the wine glasses and tosses them back inside, zips up the tent and throws on her dress.
“Ready if you are,” lifting and dropping her shoulders, “Fun day! I’m looking forward to kicking back now.”
The thunder can still be heard in the distance as we head off in the direction of the large kitchen area. It has a huge exposed roof and a large centre stainless steel cooktop area, with two barbeques. It boasts three large wooden tables polished back. They are gorgeous. There is also a ‘bar style’ table with eight timber stools. The kitchen is fully decked out with everything we need. Walking in, I can see Emi has already claimed the ‘bar’ table. She is setting up everything for us.
“Hey, what can I do?” throwing down my assortment of items.
“Nothing, sit back and relax,” she says happily. Emi is our mother hen; she would do anything for anyone. She is happier doing the chores and organising than sitting back and watching. I pull up a stool to keep her company. Emi has the girl next door look about her. She is petite, blond, blue-eyed and always has a smile. She is still in her red bikini with a towel thrown around her waist.
“Drink, Emi?” Cayleigh is pouring ours.
“No, I’ve got one, thanks.” As if to prove it, she picks her glass up and takes a sip of her wine.
“My lady,” Cayleigh offers me my drink.
I take my first sip.
“Mmm. Good,” nodding my head.
Emi’s face lights up, her eyes passing me. I turn around to see the rest of our group heading in from the weather. Leading the group is Lee, Emi’s new boyfriend. Studying bioscience.
Tall, tanned, blond and completely adorable. We approved of him straight away. He dotes on her and she on him. He walks over and leans in to give her a kiss, then looks at us.
“I have our meat!” He heads over to the BBQ that, no surprises, Emi already has on and pre-heated for him.
The remaining members of our group are Stevie and her two friends, Kerri and Viv. They are sharing the third tent. Stevie’s real name is Rachel Stevens but she prefers her playful nickname. She is athletic and fit. Her light brown hair with natural blond highlights is cropped short. She wears it slightly longer on top. She has gorgeous brown eyes; they remind me of a puppy dog. Cayleigh and I first met Stevie towards the end of open week at uni. Although she did try her famous moves on Cayleigh, they only dated a few times. It was clear to them both that the sexual chemistry wasn’t there but the friendship was. And now, two years into our friendship, she has someone to tell her womanising stories to. I think Stevie is trying to make it with Kerri this trip but with Viv sharing the tent it’s kind of ‘three’s a crowd’. Viv is lovely but I know Stevie likes to tend to her woman and I wonder if another in the mix would throw her off balance. Though, they all seemed very friendly out on the pontoon this afternoon…
Throughout dinner, the conversation flows and drinks are never empty.
“So Stevie, two beautiful women to keep entertained. Are you up for the challenge?” Cayleigh asks.
“It’s been done before,” Stevie pulls a giggling Kerri in at the waist kissing her on the temple.
Emi and Lee have brought their stools closer, so they can snuggle. I am sitting opposite Cayleigh and lock eyes with her. This doesn’t go unnoticed.
“Now, now you two – no flirting in front of Emi, she is too delicate for that,” Lee jokes, knowing our fondness for each other when we have been drinking.
Cayleigh holds her hands up.
“Lila is a self-proclaimed straight woman. I wouldn’t abuse that,” Cayleigh turns her head slightly to the side and bites her bottom lip, her eyes filled with mischief.
“Yes! You would,” Stevie retorts and we all burst out laughing.
As dinner comes to an end, the storm is well and truly upon us, we can barely hear one another from the rain thrashing down. We all pitch in to clean up. Emi and Lee are the first to announce they are heading to bed. Soon after they depart, we see them in the distance heading for the male showers, together. Hmm, a bit of warming up would be nice.
Next to go are the threesome. Something tells me it will be a good night for Stevie. Cayleigh and I stay on for five more minutes enjoying the end of the night. Finishing our drinks, we pack our things up into one plastic bag and head back to our tent, slipping here and there in our tipsy haze. We are saturated by the time we finish the one-minute trek back to our tent.
Under the protection of our tarp, we drop our things from dinner. Cayleigh and I strip down to our swimmers, hanging our damp dresses on the portable clothesline. We grab our toiletries and towels, then make a quick dash to the female showers. By the sounds of the two women talking through the stalls, we guess that Kerri and Viv are here too. I hear Viv talking about her ex-boyfriend and how she wants him back. Kerri is offering advice. The last thing they seem to be thinking about is a sexual encounter back at the tent. Hmm, maybe not a great night for Stevie, I think to myself. Poor thing, I smirk, she won’t be able to make a move on Kerri with Viv bummed out about a boyfriend.
Viv’s shower turns off as Cayleigh and I climb into the end stall together. I begin to undo my mint gre
