Chapter 1
Who the fuck is flirting wit h my girl?
~~~Septembe r 2009~~~
W ho the fuck is flirting with my girl? I though t angrily.
Okay, Afia was not exactly my girl. But she kinda was, so I got to say and feel things like that when someone was actively trying to get in her pants. And she was eating it up which was lik e uuuugh!
The moment I walked into her family pharmacy, I saw him leaning on the counter, talking all sultry to her. I didn’t know what he was saying, but based on her shit-eating grin and whispered replies, I knew he was saying all the things she wanted to hear. Always the professional, she kept her hands flat on the counter and stood straight up as if she were serving a customer. But I knew that look on her face.
I casually walked over and passed another waiting customer who was also witnessing this display of lust. She looked up at me, wide-eyed, and said, “Hey, Connor. Connor this is Tyrell; Tyrell, Connor.”
We shook hands, then he leaned back down on the counter and turned to Afia, clearly not threatened by me at all. I know…It’s because I’m white . If I wasn’t actually at her side, holding her hand people dismiss the idea of me as her partner. I mean, what would a blond-haired, blue-eyed white guy be doing with a brown-skinned, beautiful black woman like her?
He asked, “So, have I earned the right to take you out yet, Ms. Afia?” Um ... what?
I had to mark my territory, so I smiled and said, “Ms. Afia has a date with me right n ow, so...”
He looked up at me in disbelief while she gave me the coldest glare ever. Uh-oh, she likes this one. So, I backed down. Suddenly, the customer that was waiting came over and stood on the other side of Tyrell. He looked at me first, then looked at Tyrell and asked in a calm, deep voice, “Is everything okay, Ty?”
Afia answered in her sweet voice, “Everything is fine, but Connor’s right. I do have plans with my friend ri ght now.”
She emphasized “friend” and touched his hand. I resisted the urge to roll my eyes and stepped back slightly, leaning my forearm against the wall near the counter. I waited for her. She grabbed a pen and a piece of paper from the counter and started writing her number. It was her real number too; I saw it. I averted my eyes; She can have that one. My eyes landed on the person I thought was a customer, who also stepped back slightly. He was obviously Tyrell ’s friend.
No, not a friend. Relative. Brother. He had to be. They looked alike, but he looked older than Tyrell, who was about my age. They had the same features: Strong jawline, high cheekbones, full lips, small ears—I notice ears. And eyes. They both had gray eyes. Their similarities stopped there. Tyrell was thinner, a couple of shades lighter, curly-haired, and he had a laid-back way about him. The brother had dark brown skin, a muscular build, and a dark Caesar haircut with circular waves going around. He was gorgeous. And he was definitely military. I could tell because I’m a Marine. And we military persons have a way about us.
From a few yards away, I kept giving subtle looks to this attractive man who wasn’t leaving much to the imagination. He was wearing black bicycle pants that showed off his muscular calves and thighs, his strong, tight ass, and nice, big bulge. A white t-shirt, that barely covered his bottom, showed off his muscles, especially since his arms were folded across his broad chest. I would have given anything to be in between those thighs at that moment. I literally found myself growing at th e thought.
In one of my subtle glances, he caught me, and I quickly averted my eyes to look over his head. He turned back to Afia and Tyrell, who continued their low talking and flirting. I waited a bit and took another chance, casually letting my peripheral vision lead me into staring at his profile again. I accidentally turned my head slightly. He turned his head and looked right into my eyes. I couldn’t turn away even if I wanted to. He wasn’t smiling, but he wasn’t upset that I was looking either. We watched each other for a moment, then his eyes slowly traveled downward. I realized while I was trying to be subtle, he was now overtly checkin g me out.
I was wearing work clothes, a black Comcast short-sleeved shirt and khakis, so there was nothing special about it. But his eyes took their time anyway. He took in my blond hair that I had been growing out since I left the Marines. He looked at my arms which, while not as big as his, had some definition. I used to run and lift weights but not as often anymore. My pants weren’t tight, but I’ve been told I got a pretty nice ass. His eyes reached back up to mine, and he was staring into my bright blue ones as I was drowning in all the silver he was giving me. His eyes traveled down to my midsection, and I was hard as fuck. Fuck it. There was point in hiding it. So, I didn’t. I let him see how hard he had made me. He pulled in his bottom lip to bite it a little, looked up at me again, and smirked. I didn’t s mile back.
We broke eye contact when Tyrell pulled on his arm. “C’mon, Mel. Afia, I’ll call you later, sw eetheart.”
“Bye, Ty!” she called after them. Mel allowed his brother to take him away without a glance back at me. But I didn’t give a shit because I got to see that tight ass all the way, and it did everything to keep my d ick hard.
Afia clapped her hand in front of me. “Hey! Don’t do th at again.”
“Huh?” I look ed at her.
“Don’t cock block me, asshole. I don’t do that to you. Don’t do that to me,” she sai d angrily.
I laughed her off. “Listen, if I scared him off, then he wasn’t for you.”
She rolled her eyes. “Dad,” she called toward the back, “I’m gone for the day.”
“Okay Fifi, see you at home,” he called back. She hated when he called her Fifi. But he was the only one who still did, so she let him.
Afia took off her pharmacy tech jacket and hung it, grabbed her bag, and met me on the other side of the counter. As she came toward me, I thought, she looks so pretty . She was wearing a bright blue, spaghetti-strapped sundress with yellow shapes and such on it, showing off her smooth, unblemished, almond-colored brown skin. Her dark brown hair fell naturally to her shoulders, but she recently put a couple of weave tracks in it to make it travel down her back. Afia had been my best friend since she was 14 years old and I was 15, and I had helped her about 100 times with her hairstyles, so I knew a thing or two about bl ack hair.
She linked her arm through mine, and we left Williamson Pharmacy together in College Hill. She loved to talk, so naturally she started talking, and I listened as we walked over to Manhattan Bagel. It was our Wednesday ritual. I would meet her at the end of her shift at 3pm, and we would go to Manhattan Bagel to hang out with our friends until I took her home. Today, she was talking about Tyrell, which was the first time she had mentioned him to me, and I found that very int eresting.
“So, he’s been coming in monthly for like six months to get his father’s blood pressure medication, and he just says hi to me. But for the last couple of weeks, he’s been coming in almost every other day, buying stupid shit. I know it’s just to talk to me. He bought Advil and hemorrhoid cream on Monday. Like, dude, really? So, finally I was like, do you really have a headache and boils on your butt or are you just coming to see me? He was shocked I was so bold, but he said, ‘You’re right, I just came here to see you.’ So, we just got to talking, and he is really sweet. He came yesterday, too, just to talk. Today
