Description

Cory knows that it’s going to take Sky some time to get used to being his girlfriend, but he’s hurt when she asks him to keep it a secret. With her birthday coming up and the chance of her leaving town, he decides not to make a fuss about it but still to give Sky a birthday to remember. Sky can't wait until her birthday. She is finally going to get to leave the home, but more importantly, she’s going to find out who her parents are. The thing is, though, that sometimes the truth is best left in the past. When Sky finds out who her parents are and what they did, will she ever be able to move on from it?

“All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.”
- Leo Tolstoy, Anna Karenina
CHAPTER 1

Monday - Cory
I woke up when my mind sensed movement next to me. My room was always a still place when I slept and I’d found that, because of that, I’d become a very light sleeper.
“Where are you going?” I asked sleepily, as I reached out and wrapped my arm around Sky’s waist so I could pull her back to me. Her skin felt hot against mine and I pushed the sheets off my body so that I wouldn’t start to sweat.
“I thought that I should probably get going,” she said, and I could hear the tension behind the false airiness she was trying to project. “I mean, I didn’t even tell the home I was staying out last night, so they’re going to be pretty pissed,” she went on as if she needed an excuse, as if she had to make me not feel bad that she was ditching out on me.
“I bet you’re looking forward to getting out of there,” I said without lettering her go. “Do you know what you’re going to do? Where you're going to go?”
I knew her birthday was on Sunday and that meant that her time at the home was up. We hadn’t talked about what she was going to do then. We hadn’t talked about whether she would stay in Denver or whether she would go some place else. In truth, we hadn’t had time to talk about it. We’d spent the night together, sure, but we hadn’t been talking.
“My social worker, said that there was a youth hostel somewhere out of town, so I figured I’d go stay there until I’ve thought of something better to do.”
She pulled against my arm and forced me to move it away. I watched as she bent over to get the small pile of clothes she’d left folded neatly on the floor. The line of her spine started to show and I lazily traced it with my finger.
“What about you?” she said. “Have you got into college yet?”
I shook my head. “I guess I’ll be hearing something back soon.”
“Where are you hoping to go?” she asked me as she pulled her tank top over her head and down over the golden glow skin that I’d been gently stroking.
“I don’t know,” I answered honestly. The truth was that I’d been hoping to get in somewhere in, or maybe near, California or Florida, but I wasn’t so sure that was the case any more. I mean, I’d just managed to get Sky to agree to be my girlfriend; did I really want to leave so soon after that, and almost certainly leave her behind?
“Come on, you must have some idea,” she pushed me. “I mean, you’ve applied to the colleges, so which ones do you want to hear back from?” She turned to look at me.
