Sky is in hospital and it isn't looking good. When Cory speaks to the doctor he finds out exactly how bad it is and he comes to realize that he’s going to have to face a harsh reality of life. When Danny shows up to give his support, Cory can't believe it. Cory demands that Danny leave, but when Sky starts to flatline they both start to realize just how much Sky means to them. CHAPTER 1

Monday - Cory
She was so still. I could barely see a faint fogging of the oxygen mask that had been taped over her face, each time she breathed out. Each time, I wondered if there would be a next time.
When I’d first met her she’d seemed so strong and full of life. She wasn’t a big girl, but her presence had been huge. You couldn’t miss her in a room. You couldn’t ignore the fact that she was there, because she wouldn’t allow you to. She looked nothing like that now. She was just flat on the hospital bed with tubes coming out of her arms and her chest rising and falling in a perfect mechanical rhythm.
I hadn’t slept in two days. The ambulance had arrived just as her seizure had subsided, and I’d been quite sure then that she was dead. The paramedics knew what to do, though. They managed to clear her airways of the blood that had clogged them and had fitted her to an air mask straight away. It was a moment of hope for me. It was a tiny sign that perhaps she would be okay and that the early hours of that Sunday morning wouldn’t be her last.
I’d travelled with her in the ambulance. The paramedics had asked about her family, but after I explained her situation they agreed to let me go with them. Danny had tried to go, too, but I’d pushed him back. He had no right to come with us. He had no right to pretend that he cared after he’d given her the drugs in the first place.
Sky was in a private room. I had a feeling that it was because she might upset other patients on the ward, but I didn’t dare ask for confirmation of that. I’d taken a spot next to her in a high backed chair that had been coated with a strange kind of plastic, which made the whole thing wipe-down-friendly. The chair made a weird squeaking sound whenever I shifted my weight, but it was the only seat available.
I felt exhausted. I felt like I could sleep for a week and still need a nap on the morning that I managed to wake up. My mom had called me a couple of times, insisting that I come home so that I could sleep and shower, but I refused. I wasn’t going to leave Sky. She would be on her own. She had no one else in the world to care about her and she needed that. She needed someone to care. She needed someone to wake up to, so she'd know that she wasn’t alone.
The steady beeping of the machine monitoring Sky's vital signs had started to blend into the background.
