Description

It’s the final week of school and everybody is getting pumped about the end-of-year party down by the river. Cory already knows who he wants to take, but when he receives an unexpected request from a girl he’s known for years, he finds his plans derailed. Sky is certain that Cory is going to ask her to the party, but he doesn’t. She tries to tell herself that she’s cool with it, but when she sees him dancing with another girl, she realizes that she might have made a mistake by pushing him away. When she spots a chance to get him alone, she takes it, but will she do something that she will later regret?

“Ever has it been that love knows not its own depth until the hour of separation.”
- Kahlil Gibran
CHAPTER 1

Monday - Cory
Danny had shown me the air mattress and insisted that nothing had happened. I felt like a dope. I believed him, as I doubted he would be able to keep such a conquest to himself.
I don’t think knowing that made it any better though. Perhaps, if Sky had told me straight away that nothing had happened, then it might have made things better. Perhaps, if she’d shown just an inkling of remorse over my clear hurt then I might have been able to excuse it. She hadn’t though. She hadn’t shown any remorse over hurting me. She’d just been pissed that I was making a big deal out of it.
I’d known Sky for two weeks and I realized that I’d spent at least half of that time hating her. She was infuriating. She didn’t make any sense, and whenever she came close, she changed her mind and sent everybody around her spiralling back into confusion. It was almost as though she didn’t care. It was almost as though the only person she thought of was herself.
She was no good for me. I knew that. I needed to walk away and call it a day. I needed to forget about her so that I could move on, but I knew that would be impossible. She was the kind of girl who changed the way you saw the world.
I don’t know how to describe it. I’d lived in the same city since I’d been born and I’d seen it every day, but it's like it had been all in grey and I hadn't even noticed. Then, one day Sky came along and she brought the vibrant colors that I had quickly grown to love. How do you forget about a person like that? How do you forget about a person who makes the world a more beautiful place by simply existing?
I walked into school on Monday with a heavy heart. I knew that it was my last week there and although, I was excited to start a new chapter of my life, I still felt some reluctance in letting the part I knew so well close.
The hallway was filled with an excited buzz, as all the students talked about what they were going to do over the holidays. I wondered about Sky. I wondered whether she would stay in Denver once school had finished or whether she would take off.
I got to my class and saw Danny standing outside. He looked as though he hadn’t caught up on any of the sleep he’d been deprived of over the weekend. Everything down to his clothes looked rumpled, and I wondered what was going on.
“Dude, you look like a zombie,” I said when I’d walked over and leaned against the wall beside him.
“Thanks man.” He rolled his eyes and I noticed how bloodshot they looked.
“Seriously, what have you been doing?” I asked, because he looked worse than a couple of nights of missed sleep would warrant.
“I went to a killer party last night,” Danny started, but then he was cut off when Jenny walked over to us.
