Love On The Verge
By - Ankur Sharma
For that girl who came into my life
As a lovely chapter and became a reason for this Book…

“Main fir se is rishte ko usi mod par lana chahta hun ,
Ajnabi banakar tujhe fir se pana chahta hun...
Har baar samjha tha tujhe bas teri khushi ke liye ,
Aa ki ek baar tujhe fir se samajhna chahta hun…
Jindagi bhi jee hai maine bas teri khushi ke liye ,
Tujhe hasakar ek baar main fir muskurana chahta hun”

The place was almost getting crammed with SMOKE all around. It was a fire. Fire which was on the top of cigarettes, hukkas and cigars. But there was one indiscernible fire too which was burning inside me, Rishi, Sameer, Guru and Mudit for our own reasons but the cause behind all this were the same and that was semester results. There was one common thing amongst us that we all believe in enjoying all the circumstances whatever life brings in our way and that has become a ground of our sitting in the Hukka House together that day.
We hanged out there for the first time but awed with the arrangements there. Around twenty separate cottages and each were adorned with dim blue lights with a wonderful aroma. A jazzy carpet for the sittings, a swanky wooden table in the centre, at the top of which one fruit hukka was there with few unburnt pieces of coal over it. We were sitting in the cottage which was at the extreme end away from the throng out there.
“Finally we found our new hang out far away from the college.” Guru said after passing cigarettes to all.
“Almost that much far away, where bloody tormentors can’t catch us.” Rishi said as he lit up his cigarette.
All faces started beaming and within few minutes the room got filled up with the rings of smoke. Then a waiter came with a bottle of beer and coke. Rishi filled one glass with beer and all the rest with coke as no one in our group did booz excluding Sameer who loved Alcohol like a girlfriend.
“So, who is at the top amongst us in percentage?” Sameer asked.
“Our notes maker, Ansh.” Guru shrieked.
The invention of this name was the reason of their fishy extol as I was the only one amongst them who prepare notes for exams and fortunately which every time getting proved as their best sword to fight their last days’ fray in exams. All faces turned towards me. I looked towards them and shown them the picture on the cigarette box which was proclaiming SMOKING KILLS.
“Hey relax. They actually wanted to say SMOKING KILLS VIRUSES AND BACTERIAS OF OUR BODY.” Sameer said.
“And what about that statement ‘SMOKING IS INJURIOUS TO HEALTH’.” I asked him like I have won the argument.
“Yes, it is injurious to the health of viruses and bacterias of our body.” Sameer winked me and the house turned into a complete laughter.
I don’t drink or smoke but still I love to be in the company of these guys. As I believe, all of them giving the best meaning to the word FRIENDS.
All the five glasses reached to their destiny and we finally roared for our friendship and for the achievement of becoming half engineers as we all passed our fourth semester well and finally got the ticket for the next one.
Few joints done, alcohol annexed Sameer but rest of others were busy with Hukka after having cigarettes. But then Sameer nudged me, he wanted to show me something which he was noticing with his squinted eyes. We all were busy in celebration except Mudit. He was peeping something from the hole which was there in our wooden cottage.
“What are you doing?” I asked.
“Nothing” Mudit said, without even looking at me, “you guys concentrate on your stuff.”
But then suddenly I pulled him by his shirt to have a check and after seeing that view I came back stumped to my place.
“What?” Rishi became inquisitive.
“Nothing” I said.
Then abruptly Rishi jumped on to that hole to see and then one by one all of us peeped from that hole and came back to our place but Mudit again got stuck up with that hole.
After a few seconds silence, Guru said, “I’ll never come with my girlfriend here. Never, ever.”
“I too.” I said, “After all making love is not meant for public entertainment.” And given a tap on Mudit’s butt.
And as the moaning sound elevated from the next cottage, a high pitch of laughs busted in our cottage that it even reached to the next cottage which was visible from that hole and the couple enjoying there regained their senses.
“What the hell, I missed it, they were just about to….” Mudit screamed on us.
“Control your testosterones, your movie is finished,” Guru chuckled, “Let’s join now.”
“What the F!!! Are you going to finish the rest of the movie now.” Mudit got irritated.
“If you are allowing me then I can.” Guru ragged him back.
`”No, thank you. I know G for Guru. And G for….”
“Cool down guys,” I stifled their altercation, “We are here to enjoy,” and I pushed the hukka pipe in Mudit’s mouth.
Actually he was the youngest in our group so was the most pampered one amongst us. After some sulking he joined us finally and we celebrated that day at the fullest.
Now here is a brief introduction about all of us. But before that I just want to proclaim that these guys haven’t played any major role in this story but it is also true that this story couldn’t get finished without them. So, let’s begin it alphabetically….
Rishi who was also from Lucknow completed his schooling with me and then coincidentally we both got the admission in the same college. So becoming each other’s roommates was so obvious. We were having various differences but as the time passed away, we learnt to adjust and now we even enjoy our differences.
Next was Guru, famous for his pot belly and jovial nature. ‘Tension’ and ‘Girl’, these were the two words which were not in his dictionary. Although everyone in my group were more than average in academics and had a belief on last 15 days study but still Guru was the real risk taker. He would study just a day before exams and the best thing was that every time he made it possible to come in the list of above average students.
Now it’s Mudit’s turn, short-heighted. I doubt it was his hereditary problem or family pressure which didn’t allow him to grow. Jokes apart, as we were in a boys’ college, but I think the lack of curves in college premises affected him the most. He makes people laugh by making the fun of him. Whatever, but he was very good and clean at heart.
Now the Don comes, Sameer, the only one in our group who loved to booze a lot. He was the most lethargic and slapdash member of our group but the most exuberant one when someone needs him in any kind of problem. But there was a condition that the problem should not be related to studies. I don’t know whether it was the effect of alcohol or his supreme quality that he was veteran in rationalizing the things what he would say.
Might be this story couldn’t reach to the readers if I was not there because I am narrating it so just getting obligated to tell you about myself.
I am Ansh, a ‘Notes maker’ for my friends because for achieving something I have the patience to sit on the chair continuously for hours and hours, and this is an endeavor of my college days which have given me strength to write a product which you are holding in your hand. I have few strong principles what I have inherited from my parents is to help others, be a good guy, study hard, enjoy but in limits, never smoke or drink and the last is everyone gets a life for some special purpose, so try to find that at the earliest and prove it. During the initial days of college when I met these guys, they sometimes even criticized me with the word ‘stereotyped’ but as the time passed away that word eloped soon and I became the most responsible guy amongst the group.
There was one topic on which I can say that we were the different branches of a tree with no leaves on it. May be that tree was still in a wait of rain. The topic was the same one which always has been proved the best part of majority of stories - ‘Girls’.
Guru was so shy to talk to girls. Rishi didn’t ever care for coming into any relation. Mudit never got time from enjoying other’s affair. Sameer only loved his beer bottle and I was the one who always hate the word girlfriend because I always wanted that whoever comes in my life comes as a partner, as my better half. May be I was born in
