INSPIRING WORDS
“There are no secrets that time does not reveal.”
- Jean Racine
CHAPTER 1

Have you ever just stared at a person and wished that you were them? Have you ever looked around a crowded street and thought to yourself, why can’t I be like them? Why can’t I be that happy, or successful, or purpose driven? Why did I get dumped with this life? Why did I get dumped into this body?
I have. It’s something I consider every day, especially when I’m around Louisa. Louisa was and had always been my best friend. She was a tall, blue-eyed girl with brilliant blonde hair that held a strong position in rivalling the sun for its beauty. She wasn’t just her looks, though. She was one of those girls that you hated before you got to know her because you automatically assumed that she would be bitch, but she wasn’t. Her good looks hadn’t tainted her. Her heart was a warm and safe place to be and I considered myself lucky to call her my friend.
I was more than just her friend, though, I was her admirer. I would have never have admitted it to her, but I wanted to be her. I wanted her hair. I wanted her curves. I wanted people to look at me with the same expression of awe that fell over them when they looked at her.
There was something else, though, something more. I wanted to be her because she had the life that I’d always dreamed about. Her parents were laid-back, understanding people who supported whatever ventures she wanted to try.
My parents weren’t like that. My mom and my dad were strict people. They believed that everything had a certain way of being done and that that certain way was the only correct way. They believed that the morals they had taken in from their own parents were good and sufficient, and that if anyone went against those morals then they had the right to cast judgement on those people for their wrong-doings.
That’s why I could never tell my parents the truth. That’s why I sat across the table from them as a secret stranger while we ate dinner. That’s why they didn’t know who I was and that was why I could never tell them. They wouldn’t understand. They’d kick me out of their home. They’d disown me. I wasn’t even willing to play with the idea of telling them. It was pointless. I knew what their reaction would be and I knew that was the reason they could never, ever know.
Louisa’s parents weren’t like that. Louisa could tell them anything, and they always tried so hard to understand. In truth, I was jealous. Louisa had everything that I wanted. She had everything that I needed and she had no idea what it was like to be a stranger to your own family.
“You look tense,” she told me one day, as we were walking out of our history class. “What’s up?”
I shook my head. It was finals week and she was being so laid-back about it.
