A Note from Roxy
With Love, Libbythe final book in the Coming Home to Brewster is series.Sigh.It’s been hard saying goodbye to old friends. I want to thank my readers who love these characters as much as I do. Thank you for reading these books…and for writing to me. Thank you for your letters and for so generously sharing the many ways the books in this series have touched your lives. As always, many “Thanks” go to my family and friends. Thank you for giving me the time and space to write, and also for knowing sometimes I need a break. Your love, laughter, and support mean the world. A big “Thanks” to Bon Wickenheiser for sharing her dream of serving others for so many years…and for letting me use her idea here. I owe you lunch! It would be hard to imagine writing these books without the never failing support of my wonderful editor, Nick Harrison. He’s a gem more precious than gold! Thanks to my agent, Janet Grant, and the stellar folks at Harvest House. You make the way smooth and the journey pleasant indeed. And, finally, to my husband, Lorren, and my daughters, Rachael and Tegan. Thank you for sharing my dream. It’s thrice the thrill because I get to live it with you! Oh, and I can’t forget Gunner, my faithful canine companion who makes sure I don’t ever sit at my computer fortoolong. Thank you…I think.
This is what God said: Before I shaped you in the womb, I knew all about you. Before you saw the light of day I had holy plans for you.
Jeremiah 1:45MSG
This book is for my daughters, Rachael and Tegan. God hadholy plansfor me, indeed!
Prologue
Libby’s letter…
Why had I thought this would be so easy? I stared at the blank page, took a deep breath, put my pen to the paper. Dear Anne, I rested the end of the silver pen on my bottom lip and stared at the words. I read the two words over…Dear Anne…Dear Anne… I hadn’t expected to get writer’s blocknow. Not after two simple words. Not after several hundred thousand words. Dear Anne,I put the pen to the paper. I’d learned it was best to just write. Not overanalyze. Not try andthinkmy way through. Just write. My pen hovered above the page. What should I say? Pretend you’re talking to her. Pretend she’s sitting next to you. I took a sip of coffee, took a quick breath as if I were going to speak. I started writing.Where should I start? Anne, do you know that if it hadn’t been for you, I wouldn’t be sitting here next to…I looked at the ream of white paper sitting on the desk by my elbow. Over four hundred pages filled with words. My words. Doublespaced. Telling the story—mine and Anne’s. If it hadn’t been for you—A familiar lump pushed its way into my throat. I closed my eyes. This was silly. I had no reason to cry now. Did she know? DidIreally know?
ROXANNEHENKE
A single tear made its way down my cheek. I smiled as I brushed it away with my fingertips. I could almost hear Anne laughing with me. “Just tell me the story,” she’d say. “You’re a writer. Start at the beginning. Once upon a time…” A soft breath of laughter blew through my lips. Heavens, I didn’t need to go backthat far! I glanced again at the sheaf of paper at my elbow. Those pages held our story. What they didn’t tell was what happened next. The part Anne hadn’t lived to see but had been part of all the same. In those pages I’d already told the story of a dream that appeared impossible. Of a friendship that seemed unlikely. Of a life gone too soon. Now I would tell the rest of the story. About a friendship that didn’t die with the friend. About a dream that did come true. So…okay…I would start there. At the end. The end that was really a beginning.
