T he moment Trigga stepped into the house, he knew something wasn’t right. Although he’d been out of the street life for over five years, the same senses that had helped him to survive were still intact and, at the moment, they were all sending him signals that he needed to be alarmed.
“Keesh? Why all the damn lights off—”
As soon as Trigga flicked on the switch and illuminated the front foyer of the house, his narrowed eyes focused on the one thing that was out of place on the pure white tile. The massive trail of crimson red blood smeared across the taupe floor and painted down the hall as if someone had been dragged down the walkway while bleeding profusely. Grabbing at his waist, Trigga reached for his banger instinctually, but it wasn’t there.
“Shit!” he cursed as he took off down the hallway, suddenly remembering that he’d stopped carrying it years ago. Living the family life had made him too relaxed, and he was now regretting it.
With his heart thumping rhythmically in his ears and his blood running cold in his veins, Trigga ran down the hall, hoping to God that he wouldn’t see what he almost knew for certain he would. The amount of blood on the floor was too much. There was no way that whoever it belonged to could still be alive. His shoes made a steady smacking sound as he followed the trail to his bedroom, and that’s when he felt two things in his chest that he prayed he’d never feel: panic and fear.
Shoving the door open, his eyes immediately fell on a scene that would haunt him for the rest of his life. His wife, the only woman he’d ever loved, Keisha, was lying motionless on the floor, her cerise blood painting a morbid scene around her lifeless body. Her eyes were wide open, displaying the last emotion that she’d felt before she reached her dire end: fear.
“God, no! Please, don’t take her from me!” Trigga pled as he dropped to his knees and crawled toward her body. Her blood began to seep through his jeans, but the liquid was cold against his skin and chilled his soul.
Grabbing her up in his arms, Trigga held her close to his chest, but her skin was cold as ice. She was gone. There was nothing he could do. God had taken her from him in the cruelest of ways. She was alone when she took her last breaths, and he wasn’t able to be there to protect her.
“Daddy…” a quivering voice called out beside him, and it was the only thing that could pull Trigga’s attention away from Keisha’s body.
“Cam?” Trigga called out and spiraled around toward the sound of his son’s voice.
Five-year-old Cameron made a grunting noise and then began to gurgle up blood between painful coughs as he tried with great effort to answer his father. With tears in his eyes, Trigga placed Keisha down gently and ran over to his son’s side, completely covered in her blood.
“Cam… Shit! Cam, listen to me! You’re gonna be a’ight,” Trigga told him as his eyes searched his son’s small body.
But a quick assessment told him that Cam was not going to be alright. From what Trigga could see, he had three bullet holes in his chest, and he was spitting out blood through his thin lips. Dubiously, Cameron struggled to nod his head as he looked into his father’s face with the kind and gentle eyes that he’d gotten from his mother. Eyes that mirrored the same fear that she’d had in hers when she died.
Grabbing his son into his arms, Trigga held him tightly and listened to his weakening heartbeat as Cameron continued to cough up blood. Trigga had seen this many times before with many different people. There was no need to call for help because there was no time. The entire life that Cameron should have been able to live was now reduced down to seconds. The time was near, and there was no denying it; the only thing left to do was hold his son one last time before it was time for him to go.
“Cameron, I love you, man,” Trigga told him as tears fell gingerly down his cheeks. He held him tight and repeated his love to his son over and over until his body went limp in his arms. But Trigga still didn’t let go. He continued to hold his son and cry for the family he’d lost until Cameron’s body, like his mother’s, grew cold.

The sound of movement next to him woke Trigga up from the reoccurring dream that he’d been having for the last week, and, once again, Keisha was already awake and staring straight at him. The dim lighting from the crescent moon coming through their translucent curtains highlighted the soft features in her face, but also brought light to the worry in her eyes.
“Trigga, this is like the fifth time this week that your ass has booted me out the damn bed in the middle of the night. Why in the world are you fighting and shit in your sleep?” she asked, rubbing the side of her arm with her face pulled into a tight frown, but her eyes still showed the concern she felt. Something was bothering him in his dreams, but every time she asked, he wouldn’t say anything about it.
“I’m good, Keesh. It was that stew shit that you cooked for dinner last night. It’s fuckin’ with a nigga’s stomach. What I told you about trying to cook?” he joked, rolling around in bed so that he could look at the clock.
As soon as he turned back around, he was greeted by a pillow straight to the head. Knocking it away, he started to laugh as he looked into Keisha’s pouting face.
“Stop pouting, wit’cho soft ass,” he said, still laughing as he stood up and stretched. “I’ma head down to the gym real quick, and then I’ll be up to get Cam ready to go to school. You goin’?”
“Of course I’m going!” Keisha replied, jumping up out of bed. “You think I’ma miss his first day? Shit, after all the pain I went through bringing your big head ass son into the world, you should already know I’m not about to miss a thing.”
Walking past him, Keisha wasn’t the least bit surprised when she felt Trigga smack her on the ass before she slipped into their master bathroom. But she was surprised when Trigga walked in behind her and leaned on the wall, staring at her right as she was about to pull off her silk top.
“What you doing?” Keisha asked with crinkled brows as she began to take her clothes off.
“Just looking at you,” he replied, his gray eyes glistening under the dim lights in the bathroom. She was beautiful to him, and he needed this image of her to erase what was still planted in his mind from his dream.
Smirking, Keisha bent over, making sure to keep her ass high in the air as she peeled off her panties and seductively shimmied them down her legs. Then she ran her hands over her body before turning around and sashaying over to the shower, bending low again to turn on the water.
Trigga smiled as he watched her begin her show, exaggerating every motion to appeal to his watchful stare. Turning toward him, she made a dramatic show of pulling off her hair tie and shaking her hair loose before pinching her nipples. But when Trigga reached out and grabbed at her, she snatched away and dodged him just in time before jumping into the shower.
“We don’t have time for that. Gotta get Cam ready for his first day,” she told him as she snatched the curtain closed, blocking his view of her curvaceous body.
She’d gained weight over the years since having Cameron, but she was still fine as fuck in his mind. And he was even more in love with her at that moment than he’d ever been before. In his mind, no woman could touch Keisha, and anyone who tried to steal his attention was reminded of such. He didn’t play around when it came to her, and everyone knew that.
That said, they were going through a lot of issues and it often left him to wonder if Keisha really
