Chapter One

Antonia Taylor

I f I’m not mistaken, Luke 8:17 says that for nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither anything hid, that shall not be known and come abroad. Pretty much concluding that what goes on in the dark will one day come to the light. So, now here I lay with Rick’s sweaty body on top of mine, the light on, Porsha standing there with a gun pointing at Rick, and my little cousins sitting up in their bed, tears dropping from each of their eyes. I could tell that they were all scared for their lives.
“What the hell is all of this commotion going on in here?” my aunt asked, making her way into the bedroom. At the same time, Rick had just jumped off of me. I quickly pulled the covers up over me, trying to cover my body.
“This girl was in here trying to make me have sex with her. She does this shit all of the damn time, and I’m always telling her no!” this nigga lied through clenched teeth.
“Stop lying, Rick! You have been coming in my room for months now! You raped me! And you threatened to harm my little cousins if I screamed. Tell her the truth!” I screamed. I was not about to let him play me out like I was some fast ass teenager who didn’t know how to control herself when a man was around. I had no want or desire for his nasty ass. He was a grown ass man, what the fuck did I possibly want with him?
“That bitch lying, man,” he said.
“Ma, Antonia’s telling the truth. I heard him come in here. If I never would have come, he would have raped Antonia again. She’s right about him coming in here for the past few months as well because I always would see his foot shadow at night, going to her door,” Porsha came to my defense, shocking me for the second time that night.
“No, I don’t believe this shit one bit! You just like your fuckin’ mama, you hoe! Your mama was a hoe too that took the man of my dreams, and now here your ass go, trying to take the man that I finally have! I will not let history repeat itself! I swear that shit is true when that say that the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree!” my aunt barked at me.
The fact that two people were trying to explain to her what the hell had happened and she still wasn’t believing us was fuckin’ crazy. I swear I wasn’t about to let this lady be the reason why I shed another tear, so I quickly pulled the covers from over me and jumped up from the bed.
“You know what? Fuck you! You have been making my life a living fuckin’ hell since the first day I moved in here with you. I’m eighteen years old now, and you don’t owe me shit. Let me tell you something, Auntie, I have a man, a man who treats me like a fuckin’ Queen, and he loves me more than anybody in this house ever did. What could I possibly want from Rick? This man standing here before you, if this is what your epitome of a man is, I wouldn’t want to be you!” I told her.
“And you, bitch, I appreciate you coming in here trying to save me, but you just admitted to seeing him come into my room all those nights, so you’re just as guilty as him! I have to be the one who for the rest of my life has to live with the fact that at a young age, I was raped! Not you! This whole conversation could have been easily avoided had you been a woman and stopped him the first time, but I guess your mama was right. The apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree! A mean, vindictive bitch raised you, so I wouldn’t expect nothing less!” I said, getting all into Porsha’s face.
What I had said must have struck a nerve because she turned on her heels and got the fuck out of the room.
“You ain’t got to worry about me no more, Auntie! I’ll be out of your hair and out of your life in a few minutes!” I said to her, then walked over to my little cousins and kissed all of them on their little cheeks, telling them to stop crying.
“I promise that I’m going to come and see you all every chance I get. I love all three of you guys and I don’t want you to ever forget that. PJ, I’ll put new covers on my bed for you, so that you don’t have to sleep in the bed with your little sisters anymore, okay?”
The fact that my little cousins had tears falling from their eyes was causing me to lose the battle that I fought with myself not to cry. I honestly felt bad for having to leave them in this situation because at the end of the day, I did everything for these kids. I’m the one who pretty much paid the bills around here, since my aunt was taking my check every week. I helped them with homework, I bathed them, read to them at night, now all of that was about to come to an end because I knew damn well that my aunt’s ass wasn’t going to do it for them, and neither was Porsha.
After I took the blankets that were on my bed and put some new ones on there, I picked PJ up and placed him in my bed. I pulled out my phone and noticed that it was a little after one in the morning. I went to Jah’s number in my phone and quickly called him.
“What’s good, baby?” he asked me. From his voice, I could tell that he was probably asleep. I hated to wake him, but I needed him to come and get me.
“Hey, bae, I’m sorry to wake you up, but can you come and get me, please? It’s very important,” I told him.
“What happened? Everything alright over there?” he asked, alarm evident in his voice.
“I’ll let you know once you get here,” I told him.
“Alright, let me get dressed and shit, and I’ll be through there in about thirty minutes. Antonia, stay your ass in the house too! Don’t wait outside for me because shit ain’t safe over there at this time of night. When I call you and tell you that I’m outside, then you can come,” he said. I had a bad habit of just waiting for Jaheim by the steps whenever he would be on his way pick me up.
After we hung up the phone, I started packing myself a little bag with some things that I would need. School uniform, my work uniform, just a few other items that would get me through the week. At this point, my little cousin was asleep, so I had the lights off in the room, using the flash from my phone. Once I had everything that I would need, I went over to my closet and threw on some sweats and a tank top, with some sneakers. It was perfect timing because as soon as I was slipping on my shoes, Jah texted me to let me know that he was outside. I grabbed my book bag, my duffle bag, and I walked out of the bedroom, but not before I went and placed kisses on all of my cousins’ cheeks.
When I walked into the living room area, my aunt and Rick were both sitting on the couch, smoking a cigarette, looking stupid as hell. I never in my life wished bad things upon people, but I honestly wished karma on these two and I hoped it fucked them hard!
“I’m leaving. I’ll be over every chance I get to see my little cousins, and I dare you to try and stop me. If you do, I promise I will tell the police or somebody all of the shit that I’ve been putting up with since I moved in here. Best believe they will try to take your kids away from you, being as though you’re already an unfit ass mother! Your kids deserve better, so get yourself together!” I said and then walked out of the apartment.
I took the stairs down and Jaheim was waiting for me in the car, parked in his usual spot. I opened the door to the backseat, placed my bags in the back, and then went around and got in the passenger’s side. I kissed Jaheim on his lips and then he pulled out of the parking lot.
“You want to tell a nigga what’s going on? It’s almost two in the morning, I’m out my
