Chapter One

Antonia Taylor

I t was after midnight, and I was still lying in bed, waiting for Jah to come home. At this point, I didn’t even care about the food anymore. I just wanted him home with me because now I was beginning to worry. I had called him over ten times since the last time I had spoken with him. He hadn’t answered any of my phone calls, which is unlike Jah. I swear, that man would pick up the phone for me in the middle of him playing ball with his friends. Jah never really came home this late from the shop, so I didn’t know what the hell was going on.
As I lay in bed, I kept trying to convince myself that everything was all right. Maybe the tattoo he was doing had taken longer than expected, and he was ignoring my phone calls because he thought that I would be mad about him not being home yet. I pulled my cellphone off the nightstand and tried calling Jah once more, but to no avail.
I jumped out of the bed and walked down the hallway to check on PJ. When I walked into his bedroom, he was knocked out sleep, lying on his back. I quietly walked over to him and kissed his forehead, and then walked back out of the room.
It had been a long week for me, preparing for my new job at the hotel. I didn’t like the whole idea of sitting in the house all day doing nothing, so when I saw an ad stating that the Westin Diplomat on Hollywood Beach was hiring, I tried my luck and went for an interview. I had Jah’s mom help me with a resume, and the next day I walked out hired. I was still in the training process and it was a lot to learn, but I was sure that eventually I would catch on.
I would be at the job from eight in the morning, until five in the evening. From there, I would have to go and pick PJ up from after care. I was complaining about that, so imagine how stressed out I was going to be once school started. Luckily, I was able to talk to my manager, who is pretty cool. I let her know that I was starting school in August and school is my number one priority right now. She was able to work around my schedule, so once school starts, I’ll only work Monday through Thursday, which was fine with me.
I was in the kitchen getting a bottle of water when I heard the front door open. I quickly put the water on the counter and jogged to the front. When I came face to face with Jah, his clothes were all wrinkled, and it looked like he had just been rolling around in dirt. He had a few cuts on his face, and his shoes were dirty as hell. Not to mention the pissed off look that he was sporting.
“Jah, what happened to you?” I asked, walking closer and examining his face.
He lifted his arm, trying to push me away, but I kept examining him because I wanted to know what in the hell had happened.
“Antonia, chill, it isn’t that deep!” Jah said angrily, and then walked to the kitchen, with me trailing right behind him.
I watched as he took off the book bag that he had on his back and set it down on the counter, and then went and got a bottled water from out of the fridge, before finally taking a seat at the island. He continued to ignore my presence, while I continued to stare at him, hoping that he would tell me what was going on.
“Jah, what happened? Why are you doing this? You always stress the fact that there shouldn’t be any secrets between us, but you’re holding back on me,” I told him, walking closer.
Jah placed the bottle of water on the counter and then reached out to me. He slightly opened his legs, and I stood between them. His hands wrapped around my waist as I lifted his head up again and examined him. It really wasn’t that bad, but damn, it was enough for me question him about what the hell happened.
“I was leaving out of the shop, and that nigga Red was outside waiting on me. Nigga pulled out a gun on my ass, and I pulled my shit out too. His ass said some disrespectful shit, and we got to fighting right there in the middle of the fuckin’ street. That shit only lasted for so long because the police pulled up, firing off warning shots. Of course they came over, wanting to know what happened, but I didn’t tell them pigs shit! That nigga pulled out a fuckin’ gun on me!” Jah barked.
Not only did he sound mad, but he sounded hurt. Red was his childhood friend, and to find out what he had done to me was the ultimate betrayal for Jah, even though it happened long before him and I got together.
“Jaheim, please calm down. What did the police say to you?” I asked him, rubbing his face where he had a few cuts.
“It’s South Beach, motha fuckas fight out there all the time. I could have easily let them know that was my business and his ass was outside waiting on me with a gun, but I swear I want to handle that nigga personally. Now I don’t even know if I’ll get the chance to do that because the police took Red with them. The gun that they found on the ground, which was his, wasn’t registered. I was able to go because my shit is registered. I know for a fact that the gun they found has a few bodies on it, and because of that, the nigga may do some time,” Jah confessed, but he didn’t sound happy about the situation at all. In fact, he sounded pissed.
“So, why are you mad about that? That’s his karma. If the gun is dirty like you said it is, then we won’t have to worry about him anymore,” I told him.
“Antonia, you don’t understand, baby girl. I’m a street nigga. Always have been, always will be! Niggas like me don’t go to the law for them to solve my problems. I like to handle shit on my own, especially shit that was personal to me. You’re personal to me, and I’ll fuck anybody up who fucks with you, nigga or a bitch! By Red going away, I won’t get to handle him the way I should have.”
I didn’t know what to say, but I was low-key happy that the law got to Red before Jaheim did because his ass was going to worry me to death about his whereabouts. There was a long pause between the two of us, until Jah pulled me tighter into him.
“All that late night eating your little ass be doing is catching up to you. Do you not see this back here?” Jah asked as he grabbed my ass, trying to lighten the mood. I tried to back out of his grip, but he only held me tighter.
“Oh nah, don’t be ashamed, baby. I like the extra weight. That ain’t just from the food either. That’s because daddy be putting in work,” Jah boasted, causing me to laugh.
I knew that I had picked up weight during the few months that Jah and I have been together, and I actually loved it. When Jah and I first came into contact with each other, I was skinny as hell, probably about 105 flat. There were many reasons why I was so small, the main one was being stressed as hell living with my aunt. On top of that, sometimes I would go days without eating. I just wasn’t happy at all then. I saw something on Facebook the other day, saying that when people are in a healthy and happy relationship, that they pick up what is called “happy weight”. I agree because Lord knows I now had a little booty on me, and my hips were spreading a little bit. I was still small, but not as small as I used to be.
“You trying to put in some extra work now? PJ is sleeping,” I wrapped my arms around his neck and kissed his lips.
“Damn, it’s like that? You gon’ get in the shower with me and wash a nigga back? You wash mine, I’ll wash yours,” he said, squeezing my ass tighter. Clearly, Jah loved the extra weight
