Description

Marcie had worked in gift-wrap in Nickson's Department Store for years, and Christmas was her favorite holiday. For the past several seasons, she had been Mr. Nickson's elf assistant when he played Santa and it was the highlight of her year. But this year Mr. Nickson has been sidelined with health issues and Dominic Clausson, a temporary CEO, has stepped in. He is not only running the store, but is also the new Santa. Things go well at the beginning, but then Marcie has problems with the Christmas photo printing process and lets loose with some very blue language. She is so vocal that Santa has to interrupt the child on his lap to go into the little gingerbread house and deal with Marcie's naughtiness the old fashioned way.

Nick doesn't understand what is going on. He's made a career of stepping into special situations and being Santa. He's a virtuoso at playing the magic of the Santa suits and is the acknowledged leader for his generation. But something has gone seriously wrong and before he knows it, he's dealt with the swearing elf assistant in earshot of the line of waiting children and their parents, many with electronic devices ready to record. By the end of the night, local news teams have dubbed him the Spanking Santa and the story goes viral. He tests the magic suit to the limits during the subsequent press conference and it works just fine. The Santa suit is paired with the elf dress and both are supposed to suppress all naughty actions when worn. So why did they allow the naughty behavior that got them into this situation? Plus, Nick is astonished to feel a strong attraction to his Elf Marcie, even while both of them are wearing the magic suits, something that should be impossible. There is no choice, Nick and Marcie must continue as Santa and his elf for the rest of the season, but will they be able to function without additional scandal? Is it true, as Nick's cousin tells him, that his goose is cooked? And why can't Marcie seem to keep shoes on her feet?

Chapter 1
“Excuse me, Joey.”  Nick looked down at thesix-year-old sitting on his lap listing his Christmas requests.  “I’m verysorry to interrupt you and I promise that I will hear everything you want totell me, in a few minutes.  But I need to take care of some naughty behaviorright now.”  He stood and turned to deposit the child on his winter throne. “You sit right here and wait for me, okay?”
Joey’s eyes were as rounded as they could be as henodded, and Nick gave him a smile meant to reassure him.  “That’s a good boy, thank you for being accommodating.”  Then he raised his head, turning to lookat the line of children and parents waiting their chance to talk with him.  “Iapologize everyone.  I need to take care of some naughtiness.  I will be backin a couple of minutes.”  He gave them a brief smile and strode off towards thelittle gingerbread house where the elves worked, stripping off his gloves as hewent.  “Elf Marcie, LANGUAGE!” he roared as he stepped inside.  “You are beingvery naughty!”  The door closed and the crowd could no longer hear his exactwords but they could tell that Santa was very displeased and was scolding themiscreant.  Shortly afterwards they heard thuds, easily interpreted as a hardhand landing heavily on a covered bottom, and the accompanying yelps from theunhappy elf leaving no doubts that a spanking was being administered.
The people waiting in line displayed an assortment ofreactions.  A couple pulled out cell phones or lifted their camcorders to filmthe gingerbread house and the sounds emanating from it.  Two mothers took theirchildren’s hands and led them away as they protested.  Several more parentscrouched down to talk quietly with their children, taking the opportunity topoint out Santa’s strong feelings about bad words.  Sadly, a few, intent ontheir electronic devices, never noticed what was happening or their children’suncertain expressions.
Nick emerged and pulled his gloves back on as he movedalong the line, making a point of speaking with each family, as he headed backto his throne.  “I’m sorry about that, Joey.”  He picked up the child and satdown, settling the boy back on his knee.  “Thank you for waiting so patientlyfor me.  I really appreciate that.”
“Did you spank her, Santa?”
Nick looked in the child’s eyes and saw no fear, onlycuriosity.  “Well, Joey, how would you feel if you were in Elf Marcie’s place? Would you want everyone to know what happened to you if you were being naughtyand your mommy or daddy had to deal with your behavior?”
The boy shook his head.
“That’s right,” Nick agreed.  “It’s a private matterthat other people don’t need to know about.  But I do want you to remember justhow much I don’t like hearing bad words, okay?”  There was an eager nod and hegave the boy a quick squeeze.  “Good, now let’s get back to your list, shallwe?  So far you told me a sled, a GI Joe, a puppy and a mountain bike.  Now, Iwant to make sure that you know I can’t bring you everything you ask for, Iwon’t promise that; but I do like hearing a nice long list so I have lots ofideas for what will fit in my bag.  What else were you thinking of?” And Joeylaunched into his recital again, the interruption quickly forgotten in light ofmore important matters.  Nick listened carefully, asking clarifying questionsas necessary.
Inside the gingerbread house, Elf Marcie was backbehind the camera, intent on capturing the special moment of Joey sitting onSanta’s lap, quickly printing the photo and placing it in a greeting card, courtesy of Nickson’s Department Store.  The printer had been giving herproblems all evening; more times than not she had to reprint the photos as theykept coming out smeared.  This had been the cause of her swearing as she hadjust had three unsuccessful attempts to print Joey’s picture with Santa.  Herbottom throbbed from the spanking she had just received and she was verygrateful that the heavy velvet of her elf dress had blunted it as much as itdid.  She hoped that she never discovered what it would feel like to receive aspanking like that on her bare bottom!  After Nick had finished spanking her,he had unplugged the printer, rapped it with his knuckles and plugged it backin, assuring her that she shouldn’t have any more problems, before opening thedoor and going back to meeting with his adoring audience.  She sure hoped thathe had fixed it, although she couldn’t imagine how his actions would make adifference.  But then, she’d never had much luck with machines.
Nick continued to give each child his full attention, making sure that the last one in line felt as important as the first one had. When at last, he sent the final one off with a candy cane and the photo card, agood half hour after the store had closed, he stood up from his throne andstretched out his back.  He watched the night manager trotting towards him, after pausing to stop and talk to the last family as they were escorted throughthe store by an employee who would unlock the door and let them out.  “How badis it?” he asked quietly when the man finally reached him.
“The press is here; both the local paper and the localcable station, and the Boston paper and all the Boston television stations. Undoubtedly they will pass their material along to their national affiliates. Santa, Nickson’s Department Store Santa, spanking an elf will be big nationalnews tomorrow morning on all the channels.  Couldn’t you just have let it go?”
Nick shook his head.  “If I could hear her from here,I’m positive everyone in line could as well.  I had to make sure that thechildren knew in no uncertain terms that bad language is not acceptable.  Ispoke with each family present to confirm that the children weren’t upset. They all accepted it pretty calmly and most of the parents thanked me forteaching the lesson.  No one actually saw the spanking, just heard it and Inever admitted that a spanking occurred.  I deflected anyone who asked bysaying it was a private matter with Elf Marcie.  Do you think I should meetwith the press and give an official statement as Santa or should I change backinto my business suit and meet with them as the acting store CEO?  Marcie’sstill here, right?  I don’t want her talking to them until I’ve met with her,we need to present a united front.”
“I wish Mr. Nickson were here; I don’t feel like Ishould be making this decision.  You’re the big boss while he’s gone.  Youdecide.”
Nick clapped the nervous man on his shoulder.  “Don’tworry, I have no problem accepting full responsibility for handling this.  Ijust wanted to know what your thoughts are.”
Mr. Strathmore straightened, taking on an aura ofself-importance.  “Oh.  Well, I can see pros and cons for both sides.  On theone hand, it might be good for Santa to explain himself, but then it might bebad.  On the other hand, it might be good for Nickson’s Department Store toissue an official statement, but then it might be better to distance thecompany from what Santa did.”
Nick nodded sagely.  “And that’s why you are where youare today, Thomas.”   Night manager and never going to advance any further, he thought to himself.  “Thanks for your input.  I’ll meet with them tonight asSanta and tomorrow as the CEO.  Would you please make sure that everyone knowsthat I am the only one speaking with the press?  And I’m certain that no onewill have a problem keeping Santa’s alternate identity secret, right?”  Theother man nodded.  “I’m going to speak with Marcie now and then you can
