THE GREAT FALL

I recall the first cold, like a wound to the heart. Eyes I did have but could not see, for they were not ready for the world. The chill was all around but I was not alone, there were others like me, cold and in the dark. Together we tried best we could to share our warmth. We were new but learned fast that we needed each other. Safe we thought we were, yet not from the wind and cold. Come often did the Great Warmth from before the cold. She was soft and rested with us, never long enough. The Great Warmth kept us clean as we moved, she was burdened with our protection. Movement away from the others was not safe so the Great Warmth tried to keep us together. Often when she left we hungered and reached out into the cold darkness, learning what we could of the nest. The cold was too much to be independent, we always returned to the others quickly. We waited for the Great Warmth to return, and with her warmth came the rest we needed. I am tired from being without the Great Warmth, she is all I need.
Again I awoke to the cries of my brethren and no warmth. Many sleeps have passed and we grow stronger, but still so cold. The wind blew louder than ever before and I reached out for the Great Warmth but she was beyond my grasp. One moment without the Great Warmth felt like a lifetime, nothing else mattered except her warmth. I hear the others cry and I feel their pain, for a life without warmth is a life I cannot bare.
