First off, I would like to thank God for even giving me the ability to have the talent of writing. I believe in Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ Jesus who strengthens me.”. This journey of writing has been a tough one, having to deal with school and work but it was all worth it in the end.
To my amazing parents, thank you for believing in me as well, and for not doubting me when I came to you guys with the idea of writing my very own book. I love you guys so much.
Also, to my readers, I would like to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. You guys constantly keep me motivated with the positive feedback. I appreciate the love that you all offer in the book reviews and even on Facebook. Without you guys, this journey wouldn’t even be possible, so I thank you.
Lastly, to Mr. Leo Sullivan himself, I thank you for believing in me and pushing me so that I could know my worth. In the beginning, I was writing just to have nothing to be, but you made me take it seriously, and I appreciate all the words of encouragement that you have given me these past few months.

Malaya Brown

T hings had reached the point where my mother and I were barely communicating. Well, we never had a constant communication because she was never really home. But when she did come home, she and I would chill together, watching movies and shit. Now, my mother won’t even say two words to me. For some reason, she has this feeling that I’m responsible for the death of my sister and my nephew. Don’t get me wrong, it’s the truth, but out of all the people in the fuckin’ world, how would she right off the bat just assume that it was me? That just goes to show that even after I spent time away in the mental institution and then came back to live with her, she never fully trusted me again. She clearly thought that I was still crazy after all these years. That feeling alone made me want to do some murderous things, especially to her.
It’s been two months since Mya and Justin died, and in those two months, my mom had just moped around the house. The only time that she would come out of her room is when she finally got the appetite to eat something. Plenty of nights, I would silently creep into her room and stand over her body as she slept, contemplating the thought of killing her. I thought that if I raised the knife and stabbed her to death, I would be doing her a favor; I would be putting her out of her misery because miserable is what she had been for the past two months. She had lost a substantial amount of weight, she had bags under her eyes, and her hair was even shedding.
If you ask me, her ass was doing the fuckin’ most right now. The time that she had to spend with Mya and Justin while they were here, she barely took advantage of it because her ass was always somewhere ducked off with her fuckin’ boyfriend. I swear, people like her killed me. The only time she would see them is when they came over to the house. She never took it upon herself to go and visit them in the projects where Mya was staying. But now, all of a sudden, she’s in this bitch crying her heart out every night behind their death. Bitch please!
Right now, I was in my room over at my mother’s place, standing at the mirror fixing up my hair. This may have been one of the reasons why Jarvis didn’t want to fuck with me anymore. I think he was tired of the same old looked that I was sporting. Each time I saw him, I’ve always had this Chinese bang hairstyle. Shonte switched up hairstyles frequently. Even though she may have had only two encounters with me, I’ve seen her ass on a daily. I wasn’t trying to be exactly like her, but I was just going to piggy back on some of the things that she did.
For starters, I had just finished dying my hair the same burgundy color that was in hers. Mine didn’t pop as much as hers did because her skin was fairly lighter than mine, but it didn’t look bad on me either. I distinctively remember one time being camped out at her work place and she had her hair in this bad ass bob, so I was trying my best to style it in that same way right now. Call me crazy, but I was going to get that man, even if I had to look similar to his bitch to do so.
As I was finishing up the final braid, my door swung open. I was shocked to see my mother standing there. I was grown, so whenever she came into my room, she usually knocked and waited for me to tell her that it was okay for her to come inside. I don’t know what she was doing, but she was starting to look like her old self again; she just needed to gain a few more pounds. I could tell that she must have gone to get her hair done this morning because her hair looked fuller. I assumed that she must have had her hair stylist sew in a couple of tracks for her. Her eyes still had bags under them, but her face wasn’t as sunk in as before.
“Umm, Malaya. There’s no other way for me to say this. I’ve been back and forth with thinking about this for weeks now, and I’ve finally come to a conclusion. You have to leave my home. There’s no way that I can continue to sleep in the next room, when I am convinced that you are the one who killed Mya and Justin. I shouldn’t have to sleep with one eye open every night because I can’t trust that my own damn daughter will not just snap and kill my ass,” my mother said to me as her voice shook.
Number one, she clearly couldn’t have been sleeping with one eye open every night, because if she were, she would have seen me the few times that stood over her body with a butcher knife.
“I have to leave your home? You saying that shit to me like I’m somebody off of the fuckin’ street, Ma! This is my home too! I was raised here! How the hell you just going to kick me out because of some bullshit feelings that you’re having right now? If you kick me out, where the hell am I supposed to go?” I asked her.
I couldn’t believe that she was doing this right now. Number one, I had no education, so most jobs wouldn’t hire my ass. On top of that, I had a fuckin’ record, so it made getting a job twice as hard. With no education and a criminal record, how did she expect me to bring home some type of income to provide for myself?
“It isn’t some bullshit feelings, Malaya, and you know that! Don’t you dare try to downplay the way that I’m feeling right now to make yourself feel better for what you did! I may not have any proof right now, but I know that it was you. When the firefighters arrived on the scene and put the fire out, the police saw that the sliding door was open, which could have been the killer’s escape. An escape from four floors high! Two months ago when this happened, your leg was sprained and you had bruises. I asked you where they came from, yet you gave me no fuckin’ answer. You did this shit, Malaya! You killed them!” she said, reaching behind her back for something.
As she reached, so did I. I quickly pulled open the drawer in front of me and slammed the knife right into her chest. Her body hit the floor quickly and the gun that she held in her hand fell to the floor. This is what it had come to. She just couldn’t keep her fuckin’ mouth shut, so I had to do it. My mother lay before me with blood seeping out of her chest. She was trying her best to say something to me, but the amount of pain that she was in just wouldn’t let her.
“I killed them, Ma! Damn, are you fuckin’ happy now? Is that what the fuck you wanted me to say? I killed that bitch because her ass had a baby by the man that I want, which gave her one up over me, so I had to do what I had to do! Kiss them when you get to heaven for me!” I said, raising the knife and stabbing her a good ten times before her body stopped moving.
With bloody fingers, I raised my hands and closed her eyes, followed by a kiss on the forehead. I swear, this shit felt like déjà vu because this is the same room where I had committed my very first murder. I wen
