Description

3 Nylon Lemons is divided into three sections: A collection of poetry written forty plus years ago- Some fragments of my fathers’ writing I discovered in his personal archives after his passing-and current work of my own collected since 2020 publication of Retread Rubber Eden. Lucky Ward (a constant theme named after a beloved teenage companion) is a series of prose snap shots of a Nursing Home I worked in as a very young man called Villa Care in Bellingham Washington in the late 70’s. Terrible Now that advanced age has visited me, I can only look back at those words and shake my head in amazement. The fiction of those days has become Stark Reality. With some very minor editing the original perspectives remain intact. This collection concludes with current prose/Poetry and stories that emerged from our post-pandemic world.

-FORWARD-
I am sitting here out on the end of Lost Island in the empty shell of the family home. These rooms echo with ghost whispers of our family. Both parents have passed and my sisters scattered to various other lives elsewhere. Built in 1957 the modest Levittown tract house on the corner lot of Sunset & Sutton for pennies on the dollar is worth a small fortune today. So far none of us have had the heart or guts to underwrite the inevitable disposition of property. On this overcast muggy June afternoon, I write this in real estate limbo while listening to the radio.
This project is a reflection of time gone in a world so swiftly in a wash of memory. Much like the LI Sound bluffs a block away up the street. Down the 67 Steps the perpetual tides come in and out wearing down immense glacial drifts ground down into pebbles. Later I will walk the beach picking up stones that catch my eye as my father once did when we used to visit there when I was a child. I still that regard that shoreline my primordial pool. The undulation of the Sounds voice is deeply embedded in my consciousness and I expect will be there till it is my turn to leave this earth. I truly hope that in the afterlife the Sound will follow me there.
3 Nylon Lemons is divided into three sections: A collection of poetry written forty plus years ago as a nurse’s aide in Geriatric home in the Pacific Northwest- Selected fragments of my fathers’ writing I discovered in his personal archives after his passing-and a representation of current work of my own since 2020 publication of Retread Rubber Eden.
Lucky Ward (a constant theme named after a beloved teenage companion) is a series of prose snap shots of a Nursing Home I worked in as a very young man called Villa Care in Bellingham Washington in the late 70’s. Terrible Now that age has visited me, I can only look back at those words and shake my head in amazement. The fiction of those days has become Stark Reality. With some very minor editing the original perspectives remain intact. The current prose/poetry and stories emerged from our post-pandemic world. I marvel that we survived that period and how our culture’s short-term memory has moved on so swiftly in the terrible now. I find myself always wondering just what might happen next and if we will be afforded the opportunity to sustain our fun-house normalcy that seems to unravel and fragment on a daily basis.
As I finish this introduction in mid-July and move toward the production/publishing date in later Summer/early Fall I reflect that this a collective that spans some 70 years of creative work of my father and I as young men- with the last chapter a distinct foreshadowing into the very uncertain future and the inevitable march of the terrible now. I’m going to close here with a quote from a writer I have always admired and respect.
“ All of which is to say, I didn’t pay a hell of a lot of attention to grammar, spelling or typos and when I write it is for the love of the word, the color, like tossing paint on a canvas, and using a lot of ear and having read a bit here and there, I generally come out ok, but technically I don’t know what’s happening, nor do I care.” ― Charles Bukowski - On Writing
