Description

Poetry acts as a release and expression to her emotions and helping her to navigate life’s journey.
I came to my own rescue
And inked my emotions.
Penning my feelings
Is like playing music
In wavelengths,
Connected with notes,
Creating a melody,
Staying in tune with my soul.
From time to time, we all experience difficulties that seem to consume our lives. Yet at some point, our struggles can become a source of strength that motivates us to move forward.
In a debut collection of poetry, Stephanie Chakiryan reflects on her real-life experiences and the many mountains she has climbed during her personal journey—some which remain constant today. Within her varied poems, Stephanie explores the complex emotions that accompanied her grief after her mother passed away, the battles she has fought within her soul, the anxiety that seemingly appears out of nowhere, the art of penning poetry, the strength she has found in the battles she has faced, and much more.
Catching My Breath is a volume of inspirational free verse that breathes hope, love, and light into the world.

In memory of
Karen A. Chaki ryan
For my late Mother, who is my inspiration. She always fought for what I needed in life, and most importantly helped me succeed. Every poem I have written came from my emotions of what I felt and needed at a time of grief.
With every risk I took,
I overcame my fears
One step at a time.
I took a deep breath,
And I stood up.

In a room filled with people,
The blood running through my veins,
I spoke
With all eyes on me.

The words flowed
At my mom’s wake.
It helped me realize
The person I am—
Strong and brave—
With my angel beside me.

From then on,
I started writing
To let go of the fears
That brought me here.
Even in the darkness of night,
There will be stars to always shine bright.
Keep on looking up to God
To guide you through the toughest of times.

Your guardian angel is always with you
by your side
During the good and bad
Moments of your life.

You will get through the days and nights.
Look up to the sky and pray for some light.
God has a plan just for you
With a reason to help you through.

There are no words left this time,
But there is a guiding light
To help you reach your goals in life.

My mother is my angel in sight;
She is the brightest light at night.
I never found love.
It’s all I ever wished for.
It hurts at times
And leaves me wondering

What I have done wrong
To go this long without love.
I’ve struggled all my life
To find love within myself.

Loving myself isn’t easy
When I’m in lots of pain,
Left with scars in my heart
And an empty soul.

Years went by, and
I finally found love—
Not with anyone else,
But the love within my soul.
Her presence and beauty
Shine so bright.
That smile she has
Touches lives.

The struggles she’s been through
Have been rough.
She went down under but
Finally is on top.

It comes in waves;
She’s very brave.
Take a deep breath:
She’s almost there.

She does find happiness,
Though her fight continues.
It’s just starting
And never ends.

It’s her own journey
Of loss and strength.
Her love for others goes on
Forever.
My mother is my hero.
She made the best of her life.
Her beautiful soul
Would shine so bright.

Her intelligent mind
Amazed many of us,
as did the big heart she had
To always give back.

She got to travel,
Made memories to last.
Forever we remember
The moments we had.

The parties she would host
Were only the best.
I will never forget,
And I cherish them all.

What a beautiful soul
Who lived her life.
I will always remember
The strong person she was.

Not a day goes by
That I don’t think of her.
Life does go on
For all of us.
Poetry is the way
To express myself day by day.
It always helps me say
I am really OK
And begin to write my feelings away.

When I am in pain,
I let the tears roll down my face.
All these years I’ve been fighting
all those fears I felt inside me.

It’s OK to take a risk—
That’s how I learned to grow.
It may take a little time
To overcome those struggles of mine.
I have cried many tears
For all these years
With pain inside me,
Leaving a wound on my soul,
Letting it bleed out the past,
And healing for the best
Moments to come next.
I wish you never left,
But God took you away.
You were my best friend
Who supported me in every way.
When I needed help,
You guided me day by day.
You had an intelligent mind,
Everyone would say.
You are my mom,
Always by my side.
I’ve made it this far
Through the mountains I climbed,
Stumbling over many boulders
On this arduous hike.
And finally I reached the peak,
But my journey never stops.
When no one watches me,
I start my own fire,
Throwing in all the twigs
One after another
So eventually someone can see
How I can keep it lit
And never let it burn out.
Constellations hidden in my soul
Bring light to us all.
The secret key to my life
Lets me shine bright like the stars
Way up high
In the sky
As we connect to each other,
Forming an image in disguise.
I could feel your love
Like I never felt before.
Caressing my body in your arms
With your skin touching mine,
Holding me tight,
You pull me in for a kiss.
As I let my life unfold,
My weakness turns to strength.
The challenges I overcame,
Whatever came my way,
Helped me grow into the person
I am today.
When she felt weak,
It was time for me to be strong.
All those years
She was my champion,
And she always stood up for me,
Encouraging me to finish what I started,
Using her famous line, “You can do it,”
Every time I wanted to quit.
The last thing I wanted to hear
Was when she came home in tears,
Telling me the cancer she had.
From that day,
I made sure to spend as much time as I could,
Every second that I could get,
Until God took her away.
Through poems I speak
On experiences I once had.
Feeling every word I pen,
I let out the emotions
I hold within.
That’s the art of poetry I create.
There is no right or wrong—
It’s all my own.
Spoken poems from my soul.
Her smile is contagious.
Her heart is pure.
Her words are raw.
She touches an infinite number of lives
Through the poetry she writes.
Love is a place
That should only be found
Within your soul
Before you fall
For someone at all.

There is someone to love—
It begins with loving you
And who you are now.
